My name is Ryan Gonzales, and I am a rising senior in the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE) department. During my time at Princeton, I have developed a passion for the world of audio and live sound, and have found myself exploring creative projects in both engineering research and performance art.

This theme of hands-on work extends towards my artistic endeavors. I am the sound designer for the Princeton Triangle Club, a musical theater/comedy group on campus. I have additionally worked as a sound engineer and technician for the Princeton Lewis Center for the Arts (LCA), developing the live mix for musicals, plays, and dance performances. In total, across all groups I have been involved with over the past three years, I've completed 23 different productions, including 10 shows with the LCA and 3 national tours.

My most recent work investigated the impact that various parameters had on the performance of a neural network model used for creating personal sound zones. These zones allow listeners in the same room to clearly listen to different audios (ex: two different songs) from one another, using the same speaker array.

This passion for audio/sound is what drew me to working with the Princeton Production Workforce Training (PPWT) Program as an assistant instructional intern. Considering that I graduate from Princeton in one year, one of my main goals has been to pass on my knowledge to the next rising group of sound engineers and designers on campus. I joined the program with the intent of developing my skills as a mentor and educator, while also taking the opportunity to give back to the local community in a field that I've grown to love.

This is a new group on campus I am proposing in September with the goals of creating community between designers of all different disciplines, and providing opportunities to connect with alumni, professionals, and mentors. Additionally, working with PPWT has given me some new ideas and tips on how to provide useful mentorship for student designers working with the Princeton Triangle Club and LCA.

Indeed, working with PPWT has allowed me to strengthen these skills and gain new insights into teaching and mentoring. Through assisting with hands-on workshop instruction, providing supplemental learning resources, and taking notes on how well various aspects of the curriculum are working, I have been able to grow more confident in my teaching and leadership abilities.
