DEPARTMENT OF STATISTICS

The Department of Statistics started its journey to teach undergraduate Statistics in 1944 under able guidance of Professor P. C. Mahalanobis. Later, the teaching faculty was glorified with a number of outstanding and dedicated teachers, some of whom have  achieved tremendous fame in India and abroad.

Before Presidency college achieved the status of University in 2010, the department catered to only undergraduate teaching in Statistics under the auspices of the Calcutta University and soon the department was successful enough to have a special entity in the University with its outstanding performance over the years.

From 2011, the department has been conducting both undergraduate and post-graduate semester-based programs in Statistics under Presidency University. The first batch of five postgraduate students of this department passed successfully in 2013 and received medal and certificates in the first Presidency University convocation held in the same year. At present, some of them are actively engaged in research works while others are doing jobs.

It is a proud privilege to mention that a good number of recently passed students of the department have gone abroad for furtherance of their academic career. Also, the department feels honored to have produced, so far, many brilliant statisticians of national and international repute.
