Google does not own our data. All data is the property of MacEwan University and/or you, the end user. Our contract with Google will have no impact on the intellectual property rights, custody, or control of faculty, staff, and student data.
MacEwan University will treat your data as both private and confidential and will not examine your information without just cause or due process (e.g. a disciplinary or criminal investigation), nor disclose that information to a third party unless the disclosure is authorized under Alberta’s Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FOIP Act) or any other provincial or federal law.
You will continue to be responsible for how you use and share confidential information (including personal information) in accordance with the university’s Terms and Conditions.
Although Google is already using technology and practices to ensure stored data is safe, no one can completely guarantee privacy within an online system because:

Your data may reside in multiple foreign jurisdictions and will be subject to the laws of those jurisdictions including, in the United States, the Patriot Act. Google maintains multiple copies of our data in different locations to mitigate against local system failures and IT security risks (http://goo.gl/7o1PTx).
Authentications will continue to be done through MacEwan University servers. Login information will not be sent to Google if you access Gmail or other Google Apps through your web browser. This does not apply if you use a third party mobile or desktop app (Example: Mail client connecting through IMAP/POP).
There will be no advertising or data mining for faculty, staff, and student accounts.
