Introduction:

This class is to provide the students with the opportunity to help others in our school system, our community, as well as individuals throughout the semester. If you are in BETA, NHS, or any other honor society, the hours that you accumulate during this semester will count towards those hours needed for those programs. Having said this, it means that this class is not a come and sit down and do-nothing class. Very seldom will you be on the high school campus during this class period, and you will not have your phone on you while out of the classroom.

What is the definition of community service?

Community service is unpaid work performed by a person or group of people for the benefit and betterment of their community without any form of compensation. Community service can be distinct from volunteering, since it is not always performed on a voluntary basis and may be compulsory. (Wikipedia.org)

Course Objectives:

AI and Its Usage:

All written work turned in where AI was used in any manner to formulate your paper, will be considered plagiarized and will receive a grade of a zero. While AI is the newest development in technology, it is one that should not be used in educational studies since it robs the author of their creativity.

Required Student Materials:

Come properly dressed and prepared to help others.

Activities will include but are not limited to:

1.   Helping students and/or teachers at PRCES, PRCMS, & PRCHS.

2.   Possibly spend time with the senior citizens at the Senior Center in Picayune.

3.   Listen to guest speakers occasionally.

4.   Other community services that may arise.

Assessment/Grading:

Grades will be based on participation each day of service. If you are not present for a service activity, you will take a zero for that day since there is no way to make it up.

Cell Phone Policy:

Cell phones will be left here in the classroom each and every day while we are doing community service regardless of where that service is located, no exceptions.
