Self-Directedness & Independent Learning
For lessons that the class needs to complete as an entire group, I utilize the following resources: Quizizz & USATest Prep.
Quizizz uses short assessments in a fun and competitive way to keep the students interested on the topic at hand. I choose a quiz based off of the material we are learning and they complete it and compete for the top ranking in my classes. It is worked independently and gives me a score on how they performed on the quiz. This supports the students by presenting the material in an interactive way. It supports our goal as a class to better understand the material so we can move on to more difficult lessons.
USATest Prep is accurately named. It provides questions that will prepare the students for the State Test. This resource is highly beneficial to the students so they are familiar with questions that are on the state test. It helps when you can practice problems with the same wording and setup. This is beneficial to the teacher and our end goal by seeing what they have mastered and what needs to be remediated before the state test is among us.
Assistive Technology in the Classroom
The best way I can explain assistive technology is a resource that meets students where they are and assists them along in their learning. This is very helpful when it comes to differentiating learning in the classroom.
A program called Kahn Academy is accessible to all students. They provide videos for pretty much any subject you could want plus SAT prep courses. It is free to all students. The best feature this program offers is the ability for my EL students to have videos on lessons translated to their original language. This is extremely helpful for one-on-one time and gives my EL students the opportunity to learn the lesson in their original language. I can assign the lessons to specific students and they can learn the material on their own, with any accommodations they need.
Common-Lit is a language based resource that is useful in virtual learning as well as accommodating students with Special Education needs. It has a "read-to" option that helps the inclusion students with comprehending what is being asked. It also provided extreme support during virtual learning. You can assign passages to students, get their feedback, then comment immediately on their feedback. It gives immediate help for students struggling with the material and provides the support inclusion students need.
