Children Studying at the Astral Library, n.d (c.1900)
Source: Pratt Digital Archive“You will find that you cannot long deceive the world. It will find out just what you are and if you are true and faithful the world will have faith in you.”
“Try to be genuine. Nothing will give you so sure a road to success as to be honest…Make few changes but make the most of opportunities.”
"Have pride in your character. Don’t do anything you would be ashamed of. Be a gentleman whatever your business."
Like the Thrift, Pratt endeavored to teach his students the importance of moral improvement through practical participation. He started the Astral Apartments in 1886, but eventually decided that his students would work to educate the kindergarten at the Astral, while also enforcing ideas of moral improvement - that looked at teaching the workers there that their character had to be beyond doubt to live at the Astral and to benefit from the numerous advantages that Charles Pratt would aid them in.
