The D2L Quiz tool has many automated grading features, especially for multiple choice and true-false questions, but short-essay, written response questions will need to be graded manually. Instructors may also need to add comments and adjust scores on individual questions, even on those that are graded automatically. This page describes how to grade a quiz or exam on D2L.
Before reading the information on this page, consider reading the following pages first:
Create a D2L quiz or exam, includes instructions for connecting quizzes and exams to the D2L Gradebook.
Assign Special Access for students with testing accommodations.
Create an Exam Review Session so students can review their answers and view instructor comments.
In order to grade a quiz or exam, you will need to go into the student's exam attempt. There are two ways to go into the student's exam attempt.
Begin in the "Enter Grades" area of the D2L Gradebook.
Locate the grade column for the specific quiz or exam. (The quiz or exam will need to be connected to the D2L Gradebook - see link above for instructions on how to connect a quiz or exam to the Gradebook.)
Click the question mark icon next to the student's score.
In the popup window, select the exam attempt you would like to grade from the drop-down menu (ex. Attempt 1 or Attempt 2).
The "Completion Summary" provides summary information about the student's exam. Scroll down to the bottom to provide overall comments and feedback.
Select an Attempt from the drop-down menu to view results on specific questions.
From the D2L Quizzes area, click the down-arrow next to the name of the quiz or exam you would like to grade, and select "Grade."
Click on the student's attempt in the exam submission area.
When reviewing the student's attempt, you can edit the Final Score and provide overall exam feedback.
Scroll down to view responses to specific questions.
Question details include the text of the question and the student's response.
For automatically-graded questions (such as multiple choice and true-false), you'll see the student's response, the correct answer, and the student's score.
For manually-graded questions (such as written response and short answer), you'll see only the question text and the student's response. You'll have to assign a score - it will be blank.
Assign a score or adjust the score as needed.
Provide a comment or feedback for the specific question in the Feedback box.
When you have completed reviewing and scoring all questions, click "Update" at the bottom.
Remember that instructors need to setup an Exam Review Session that allows students to see question feedback in order for students to read the instructor's comments. By default, students see only their score, no comments.
