Portland Public Schools recognizes that suicide is a leading cause of death among youth and that even more youth consider and attempt suicide. The possibility of suicide and suicidal ideation requires vigilant attention from all PPS staff. Our Board Policy requires a plan, education, and training.
If a student is experiencing thoughts of suicide or has a plan to die by suicide, Sabin Elementary School Counselor, QMHP, Psychologist and/or Nurse will follow the PPS Suicide Prevention Protocol to assess the students level of risk and to connect them to mental health support that works best for them. This work is guided by our Sabin Suicide Prevention Plan, as well as our staff Suicide Prevention Trainings and Professional Development along with PPS Mental Health Resource Chart.
