Oregon Student Music Access Project
The Oregon Student Music Access Project (OSMAP) is a new study on the accessibility of quality music instruction to Oregon students.
Initiated by the Oregon Music Education Association (OMEA), the project helps stakeholders determine the status of music education within their local school district and statewide by comparing student demographics and certified music instructor staffing levels for general music, band, choir, and orchestra/strings at Oregon schools. Data collection began in 2014 and was completed in 2016.
The searchable database will be posted publicly here and on the OMEA website. Initial data collection analysis showed that over 56,000 Oregon public school students have no access to music curriculum taught by a certified instructor during the school day. Round 2 of data collection is currently being collected and analyzed. With this data, we will celebrate areas of strength in Oregon’s school music programs and offer actionable guidance to stakeholders for remedying inequities where they exist.
