Strong Tier I practices include clear, consistent and predictable responses to unexpected behavior. Behavior is communication. When we are curious about what a behavior means, it can help us come to understand student need and modify the adult behavior, the student setting and/or the student experience in order to enhance educational outcomes for those in our care.
It is important to remain visibly calm and keep our voice neutral when engaging with a student exhibiting unexpected behaviors. This provides an opportunity to not only model self-regulation, but also help to deescalate the involved student and provide others in the area with a sense of safety.
