Tier II interventions are coordinated by the Student Intervention Team. They are targeted interventions that allow for additional time and support to learn essential behavior practices and targeted social emotional learning skills.
Interventions may take place in small groups with students with similar functions of behavior. Tier II social emotional interventions can be delivered by a school counselor, school social worker, general-education funded school psychologists or other support staff, in collaboration with the classroom teacher.
Tier II Behavior Intervention Planner (PK-8 or 6-12)- Can be used by SIT to align with your school’s Tier II intervention menu and used during SIT meetings when selecting interventions and intervention mentors for students.
Tier II Social/Emotional Skills (SES) Groups: These resources have been developed to support the work of school counselors, social workers, school psychologists and other student service providers. These group interventions met all functions of student needs, either access/obtain or escape/avoid.
Check in Check Out (CICO): Designed for students who want to access connections with adults or access to an object or activity. It provides students with a daily morning check-in with a trusted adult to reinforce expectations for the day. Staff throughout the day provide feedback on those expectations. Students check out with their trusted adult at the end of the day to celebrate successes and problem-solve challenges.
Breaks are Better (BrB): Used alongside CICO, this is best for students whose behaviors are maintained by escape or avoidance of assignments, activities or tasks. Students are allowed built-in breaks throughout the day and receive feedback on progress in communicating their needs (how to request and take a break in a way that aligns with the plan established by the teacher and student).
Meaningful Work: A school-based jobs program that gives students responsibility and helps them develop purpose, self-worth, pride, and a sense of belonging and connection. When matching students to jobs, it is essential to consider how the work will be perceived by other students and the school community. Ensure that the job does not support racial, gender, or cultural stereotypes. Jobs should be “high-status.” Additionally, the student must WANT the job and it should NEVER be used punitively. Jobs should always elevate the student’s status and build esteem.
Affirmations: Provides students with written positive feedback related to schoolwide expectations throughout the day. Unexpected behavior is still supported, though not included in this form. It is particularly helpful for students who may become dysregulated when they feel their behavior might elicit less-than-desirable feedback.
Check and Connect: A structured mentoring intervention to promote student engagement through relationship building and systematic use of data. Students are matched with school-based staff for regular and predictable check-ins on general progress and behaviors of concern. The intervention provides opportunities for relationship, problem solving, and support.
