Our redesign team felt strongly that increasing conflicts in school require robust restorative justice systems. These will already be implemented across the district, but we invite specific, prompt middle grades implementation, including collecting baseline data, providing professional learning, and expanding staffing and programming. To support this, each K-8 and middle school will have a Restorative Justice Coordinator during the 2023 2024 school year.
Improve school and classroom climates by focusing on community, relationships, and responsibility.
Promote social and emotional skill development by teaching students self-awareness, empathy, communication skills, responsible decision-making, relationship building, and conflict resolution. (alignment with TSEL)
Increase safety and order in school buildings by decreasing conflict, de-escalating volatile situations, and promoting a sense of collective responsibility. (alignment with Campus Safety Agents CSA)
Decrease disciplinary issues and disruptions, and serve as an alternative to harmful exclusionary practices such as suspension and expulsion. (alignment with School Climate Teams)
Promote student engagement in learning and aid in classroom management. (alignment with teaching staff)
Increase student sense of belonging, reduce disparities in discipline between students of color and white students, and reduce exclusionary outcomes.
All PPS comprehensive middle schools and K-8’s have been staffed with a Restorative Justice Coordinator who is supported centrally by a Restorative Justice Specialist.
