Jessica Floyd, a 4/5th teacher at Astor K8 School in Portland, Oregon, wanted to bring the Oregon Trail and Western Migration to life for her students. Instead of relying on the classic computer game, she envisioned a hands-on experience that would deepen their understanding of this pivotal time in American history. Recognizing the potential of cross-curricular content with social studies, engineering design, robotics and coding to engage her students, she reached out to the PPS Learning Tech team for support.

Working closely with the Verizon Innovative Learning Schools (VILS) coach, Teacher Olivia works hard to ensure that learning in her classroom is authentic and requires critical thinking. Emelia O'Shanecy is a Learning Acceleration Instructional Specialist in Elementary Math and works regularly at Woodlawn Elementary School. The Learning Acceleration Instructional Specialist (LAIS) Team targets core instruction. Through collaboration with classroom teachers, the LAIS Team creates scaffolds and experiments with different co-teaching models in order to increase student participation and conceptual understanding of grade level standards.
When Harrison Park Visual Arts Teacher Dani Mitchell contacted Verizon Innovative Learning Schools (VILS) Technology Integration Coach Dr. Brenda Carpenter, she knew she wanted to do a stop-motion project with her middle school students. As a first year teacher, Dani did not know what resources were available, but she was inspired by the strata-cut method developed by local artist David Daniels.
