MENTAL HEALTH

RESOURCES

Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices. Chances are, if you are generally happy, you have good mental health. If you are often sad, anxious, stressed, or overwhelmed, you could probably use some help improving your mental health. Suicide prevention includes food security, affordable housing, destigmatizing Mental Health, increased access to mental health care at all tiers, family acceptance of individuals who identify as LGBTQIA+, Race-Based Student group access, and a positive climate for students, etc.

suicide prevention

OUr Plan

Portland Public Schools recognizes that suicide is a leading cause of death among youth and that even more youth consider and attempt suicide. The possibility of suicide and suicidal ideation requires vigilant attention from all PPS staff. Our Board Policy requires a plan, education, and training.

If a student is experiencing thoughts of suicide or has a plan to die by suicide, Beverly Cleary counselors will follow the PPS Suicide Prevention Protocol to assess the students level of risk and to connect them to mental health support that works best for them.  This work is guided by our BCS Suicide Prevention Plan, as well as our staff Suicide Prevention Trainings and Professional Development along with PPS Mental Health Resource Chart.
