Algebra 1-2 is the initial math course available for high school credit in PPS. Students who are taking Compacted Year 2 in middle school (all Astor 8th graders) can earn high school credit for Algebra 1-2 with a proficient or highly proficient mark and test in the 70th percentile or above on the Spring MAPs Assessment, or a 3 or 4 on state testing at the end of the year. Geometry is the second math course available for high school credit in Portland Public Schools. Algebra 3-4 is one option for the third math course available for high school credit in Portland Public Schools. Students should previously have been successful in Algebra 1-2 and Geometry before taking this course, as students often feel that Algebra 3-4 is a significant step up in difficulty compared to either Algebra or Geometry.
