About the Course

Students in the Freshman Seminar over the course of the year will evaluate what it means to be truly “College-and Career-Ready” by developing social, emotional, academic, and financial skills. You will develop organizational, collaboration, and communication skills by creating and executing high school level classroom discussions. While working through Sean Covey's best-selling book, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens, you will learn about and apply these timeless principles of the 7 Habits and the tough issues and life-changing decisions teens face. Based on your findings you will be asked to reflect on what you have learned through different types of writing. Skills in this class will help prepare you for group assignments, public speaking assignments, tests, projects, essays, and presentations in all of your core subjects. You will gain very valuable resources over the course of our time together that will allow you to succeed in the classroom, as well as in many aspects of everyday life.

Goals

We will:

• establish rules, expectations, and procedures that remain consistent for every student

• create partnerships with all stakeholders (parents, community, colleges, students, teachers and administration)

• embody Greyhound Greatness by promoting character building, community service, and school spirit

• promote accountability, time management, self-reflection and self-assessment

• ensure that assistance is in place for struggling students

• collaborate to create interdisciplinary units, student centered projects, and plans of actions for students

• explore and expose students to post-secondary options
