Back 2 School 2023-2024

PPMS Families,

Only a few more weeks until our hallways are filled with students again! Our custodial staff has worked hard to deep clean and prep the building for a new year. Our staff has had a few changes over the summer, and we are excited for you to meet our new faculty and staff members. Let me be the first to welcome our new Assistant Principal, Mrs. Ashley Euler. Mrs. Euler has been in education for the past fifteen years. She comes to us from the New Berlin School District where she was their Director of Student Services. Both of us would like to say we cannot wait to see all of our students back in the building on the 21st. Everyone at PPMS is eager to begin the upcoming 2023-2024 school year on the right foot. Please make sure your family reviews the important information below, as well as the PPMS Student/Parent Handbook linked here

Can't wait to start the year with all of our members of Cardinal Nation!

Andrew West

Principal

Cardinal Nation

Cardinal Nation is a living, breathing community of staff, students, and parents. It is a place that strives to be a joyful, safe, and supportive community which promotes in-depth academic learning and enhances physical, emotional, and social well-being. In Cardinal Nation we promote each student’s personal excellence by establishing trusting relationships among students, staff, and families, and building community partnerships that support and embrace innovation and fostering a sense of pride in our school.

Students will review PPMS expectations, core values, and basic behavioral norms during the first week of school. This year, the theme Be the Good will underscore a key idea at PPMS… YOU are what makes Cardinal Nation great! What you do affects others, in multiple ways. How can you “be the good” for yourself and others at PPMS?

Open House

Whether you are new to PPMS or have been around the block, Open House is a great opportunity to meet all the amazing people that work in our building. On Thursday, August 17 from 5:30 - 6:30pm, join us at PPMS to kick off the school year by seeing friends, meeting staff members, and if needed - dropping off supplies (first hour class). A printed copy of each student’s schedule will be available. If you can’t make it, that is completely okay.

PPMS Technology

All Pleasant Plains students are in a 1:1 digital environment. That means that each student has a chromebook for his or her use academically. These are used every day at the middle school so having good habits is important for a successful school year.

How can I help my student be successful with his or her laptop?

If you have not done so recently, it might also be important to read through and ensure you understand the PPCUSD8 Technology Guidelines and Chromebook Agreement form which can be found here as well as on the PPMS website in the Student/Parent Technology Corner. In that section of the website you can also find some helpful videos on anything and everything related to Chromebooks. Please ensure that your student brings their Chromebook fully charged on day one (and everyday after that!!).

New students as well as ALL 5th graders will be receiving a new Chromebook and charger during the first week of school. For 5th graders to receive their new Chromebook and charger they need to ensure they bring both their old Chromebook and charger with them on day one so they can be switched out!

School Supplies

Team specific school supplies lists may be found here as well as on the middle school website.

PE Clothes

At the middle school, students have PE every day.  6th, 7th, and 8th graders will also change for PE. PE teachers will cover this the first day, but the dress code for class is a blue shirt and red shorts. We do have basic blue shirts available to purchase for PE.  If you ordered a shirt during registration, those will be passed out during PE the first week of school. If you did not order a shirt, or would like to order extras, please contact the office. Shirts are $7.00 each and may be paid for by check (Pleasant Plains Middle School) or cash (correct change is required).

Lockers

Each student at PPMS will have a locker in or near his or her grade level teachers,  as well as a PE locker located in the locker room. Locks for both lockers are optional; however, this means if  your student will use them they will need two locks! As always, backpacks and jackets will be kept in lockers during the school day. If your student has an over-sized bag for extra curricular activities or other reasons, grade level teams will have designated areas for these items.

Schedules

Student schedules are now available in Teacherease. For any issues, please contact the middle school counselor Mr. Ollech at 217.626.1061 or mollech@ppcusd8.org.

Bus Routes

Bus routes are finalized and available in the Stopfinder app. For any issues with routes please contact the bus barn at 217.626.1300 or Mrs. Cassie Kimes at ckimes@ppcusd8.org. For any issues involving students or behaviors on the bus, please contact Mrs. Euler at 217.626.1061 or aeuler@ppcusd8.org.

Cell Phones: Disconnect from Distractions

Families, one of the most difficult conversations you might have with your student  in preparation for the school year might be the…middle school cell phone policy! At the beginning of this school year, please continue to express the importance of the middle school cell phone policy to your student!

As a reminder of our policy, cell phones should be silent and in lockers during our school day (8:10 a.m. - 2:56 p.m.)! Phones, earbuds, and headphones should be out of sight and put away in lockers during the day. Some smart watches also have cell phone capabilites. Please know that if these watches become an issue for a student during the day, they will be asked to not wear them.

How can you help us?  First, please reiterate and support this expectation to your student. Your partnership is greatly appreciated by us!

What if your student texts or calls you from his or her cell phone during the school day? Please demonstrate your support and trust in us by letting your student know you will talk to him or her at the end of the day. Please remind your student you want him or her to follow our expectations and put his or her phone away.

What if your student is communicating to you about a supposed peer conflict or issue? Please help us by encouraging him or her to reach out to a caring adult in the building about his or her concern.

A Middle School Day

As your student continues to prepare for the "big day," here are some helpful guides  for "landing" and "taking off" at PPMS!

School Hours: Our school day starts at 8:10am with first period and ends at 2:56pm. Please note - due to our ability to provide supervision for your student - our doors do not open for students until 7:40am.

Drop-off and Pick-up Procedures: As you come in the Farmingdale/PPMS entrance, please ensure you are obeying all traffic signs and please be patient if there is a line or back up of vehicles.  As you come into the middle school parking lot, remember that buses will be pulling in on the left side to follow the bus lane around the building. Car riders being dropped off or picked up should stay right as they come into the parking lot and again, follow all traffic signs. Please pull as far forward in the unloading/loading area as possible to ensure more cars can fit in the space. Please exit the unloading/loading area in an orderly and safe manner by following the roundabout when leaving the parking lot or circling the entire parking lot. Please do not drive through the parking spaces.

When students enter PPMS in the mornings, 8th graders will be in the commons and 5th, 6th, and 7th graders will be in the gym. Each will have their designated areas. Students are expected to be in their assigned areas, not the hallways, until the first bell rings at 8:00am. If a student plans on eating breakfast, they should go straight to the commons upon arrival and eat at the designated breakfast tables.

Attendance:  Please note every day matters at PPMS!  It is crucial to have your student at school as much as possible, as we love having them with us! The office tracks monthly attendance data to ensure we are supporting all of our students and families.

Please call (217) 626-1041 as soon as you know your child will be out for the day. If you call before 7:30am or if you do not get an answer feel free to leave a voicemail with your child's name, parents name, grade and why they are absent! You can also email either of our amazing secretaries, Mrs. Morrissey (cmorrissey@ppcsd8.org) or Mrs. Reddy (jreddy@ppcusd8.org) to inform them of absences. They will start making calls at 9:00am to find out why students are missing if they haven't heard from anyone. They can also enter attendance in advance, so you can call anytime when you know your student has an absence coming up, like an early appointment the next day, so it is not forgotten in the morning rush.

If your student will need to leave school during the day, we would appreciate it if you call the office in the morning and let us know what time they will need to leave, so we can have them ready. We will then let teachers know what to expect. Please note that you will need to come into the office to sign your student out as well as to sign them in on return. This is also the case if your student arrives at school late/tardy (after 8:10am).  Doctor’s notes can be brought to the office when your student returns or they can be scanned and sent to the same email for Mrs. Morrissey or Mrs. Reddy.

Daily Schedule: PPMS follows a daily schedule where students attend all of their scheduled classes each day for roughly 47 minutes. During the day, students will attend their 4 core classes (Math, Science, Social Studies, and Language Arts), PE, an elective period that rotates quarterly, WIN (What I Need - where we focus on extra support for math and reading, as well as social emotional support/strategies), lunch, and P.A.C.E  (Plains Achieving Curricular Excellence aka Study hall) to wrap up the day. Students in Band and/or Choir will also meet during our W.I.N period. You can find a breakdown of the times of each hour of the day on the school website.

Lunch: Students will get their lunch card on the first day and we will have PPMS lanyards available for purchase for $2.00 each. Students who have lost their lunch cards will need to pay $3.00 to the cafeteria to replace them. Funds can be uploaded to your student’s lunch card via TeacherEase or checks can be sent with them and dropped off in the lock box in the commons. Extras, snacks, and drinks are available to purchase during lunch with a students lunch card. Please make sure you have discussed with your student your expectations on what they can spend the money in their account on. Please also note that these extras are all only available to purchase if a student has his or her lunch card.

PPMS Athletics

To stay up to date on anything and everything related to Cardinal athletics, check out the Pleasant Plains Athletics website here. A link is also available on the PPMS website.

Cardinal Club

We are blessed at PPMS to have an amazing parent teacher organization that helps in many big and small ways throughout the  school year. If you are interested in joining Cardinal Club, check out the included information.

More Information! While there are a lot of details within this newsletter, it is not an exhaustive list. During the first week of school your student will be bringing home a slip for parents to sign that states that both parents and students have reviewed our School Handbook. In the handbook you will find more details on other important information such as discipline procedures, dress code, etc. Students will also be bringing home Team and classroom expectations. I strongly encourage you to be on the lookout for and read through all of this information so there are no surprises when a call home has to be made. Team and classroom expectations can be found on each Team’s website and you can find a copy of the student/parent handbook on the school website here.
