Mobility Devices
Mobility Devices
This page is a resource for District Interpretive Coordinators to improve access to their park sites by acquiring mobility devices. Mobility devices may include and are not limited to beach wheelchairs, manual wheelchairs, and emerging technologies such as track chairs which provide access to trails and beaches which may not be considered traditionally accessible under the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act). See below for more information!
There is currently funding from the interpretation and education division to support the purchase of beach wheelchairs for your park site. Beach wheelchairs are one of several forms of equipment utilized by California State Parks to increase access to park resources for visitors with mobility challenges. These devices allow people who use wheelchairs or walkers to enjoy a day at the beach, going where conventional equipment can’t traditionally take them – to the water’s edge.
If you are interested in a beach wheelchair for your park site, please follow these easy steps:
Please work through your chain of command for approval of the purchase of a beach wheelchair for your park site.
Use this form to submit a request for a beach wheelchair or manual wheelchair. (This form is currently closed due to the end of the fiscal year, check back in July!)
Upon completion of this form, you will receive a confirmation of your request. This request will be reviewed by the interpretation and education division for review and approval.
You will be notified upon receipt of approval, and a purchase order will be filed by the Interpretation and Education Division.

Please Note: While there is no Department policy specific to manual wheelchair use, DPR does have a beach wheelchair policy. (See DOM 2607.10 for details). Beach wheelchairs are designed to operate on sandy surfaces without needing a beach access mat. They are not designed to be operated independently. Someone who requests use of a beach wheelchair will need a companion who can push the user while seated in the beach wheelchair.
