Mrs. Martin is a Birder! Are You?

Hello! Mrs. Martin saw a lot of birds so far this spring. Can you count all of the birds she saw? Can you write the number of birds she saw? How many? Which ones? Talk to your family about it.

  1. I needed to fill up my bird feeder for all the hungry birds. The seed I use has a mix of black oil sunflower seeds and corn kernels. In all there are 653 seeds that fill up the whole feeder. There are 427 black oil sunflower seeds. How many corn kernels are in the mix? (No, I don't really count my birdseed! :) ).

Write an equation and then solve this problem anyway you want.

2. I bought a 45 pound bag of seeds in April and a 27 pound bag for May. Each spring I use about 115 pounds of seed. About how many more pounds of seed will I need this spring? Solve this problem any way you want.


Mrs. Martin's Sea Glass Collection: How many fit in this bottle?

Here's a picture of one of my green sea glass collections. It's a small bottle with small pieces of glass in it. I never counted my collection before. I was curious to know how many I was able to fit in this cool triangular bottle. Before you count the collection, first make an estimate, a good guess. Write down or whisper your estimate to yourself.

I organized the green sea glass into groups of 10 and then groups of 5. You can count them one or both ways. Notice there are some that don't belong to a group, so don't forget to count them! I told you they were small pieces! After you count think about if your estimate was close?
