As we celebrate and recognize the achievements of Latinx people and communities, let's recognize Pura Belpré and the recipients of the Pura Belpré Award.
According to the American Library Association, "This award is named after Pura Belpré, the first Latina librarian at the New York Public Library. The Pura Belpré Award, established in 1996, is presented annually to a Latino/Latina writer and illustrator whose work best portrays, affirms, and celebrates the Latino cultural experience in an outstanding work of literature for children and youth."
The award itself is named after New York City's first Latina public librarian. She was also an author and storyteller.
