Dear Casco Bay Families and Friends:
Nationally and locally, the 2021-22 school year was very hard - and very much harder than expected. The wounds from pandemic living and learning were deep and diverse - for students, for staff and for families. At Casco Bay, thanks to our astounding staff, students and families and how adeptly they work together, we emerge from this year unusually tired, but - somehow - stronger and better.
In our return to full-time, in-person learning this year, our goal at Casco Bay was as clear and simple as it was ambitious and vital: to revitalize our community by engaging students in meaningful relationships and meaningful work. This spring marked the glorious return of CBHS traditions we had not seen in two years: Family Crew Night, Prom and the Cardboard Boat Race. It also saw the return of two culminations - Play is Work and The People of Portland Project - that last happened on March 13th, 2020, the final school day before the pandemic necessitated fully remote learning. This spring also spawned firsts that show the power of our continued striving to be an equitable, anti-racist school: a new student-designed Muslim prayer space, our first ever Queer Art and Activism Intensive as well as a courageous conversation on restorative justice.
All year-long, the Class of 2022 has led the way in our community’s renewal and resurgence. All three of the firsts noted were catalyzed by seniors. To give you a deeper sense of the Class of 2022’s spirit and legacy (and as is tradition in the year’s final newsletter), I share with you some excerpts from the Class of 2022’s Final Words.
***
“I know now that I am going to go boldly into a life that scares me to the depths of myself. I am going to go boldly because when someone pokes fun or I mess up, I laugh. I laugh and I take up space.” ~Maizie Hummel-Logee
“But it’s worth thinking about the purpose that lies beneath every step that you take right now. What are you gaining? How are you helping others? How is it making you feel? What purpose does it serve before you know the world will be over?” ~ Fatimah Lamloom
“[T]he most important question a human can ask: What If?” ~Silvio Morales
“... I know that this place and these people bring the best out of me and make me be the person that I want to be.” ~Mario Pulido-Ladero
“In the words of the Great Gonzo, I'm ‘whatever.’ I am whatever I am, and that's a wonderful thing. Why wouldn't it be?...[ N]o matter who I am, who I have been and who I will become, I will treat myself with care.” ~Finn Reidman
“I had to remain strong and push through, even though I didn't want to, and I felt like quitting.” ~ Omar Mohamed
“I like to think that I've really come around to our misfit group of lizard people and shark fans and snail parents and cat lovers and just all around beautiful people, and I am so glad to now know the gravity behind the word ‘crewbie’.... Casco sets you up to make friends, and crew sets you up to make Casco worthwhile.” ~ Toby Mueller
“Red is perseverance. Red is pain. Red is love. Red is passion. My photography is an outlet for all the forms of red to flourish. My subjects are like me, transitioning from adolescence to adulthood…. As I met some kindred spirits, I noticed I was not alone.” ~ Liv Ivy
“...[W]hy do I make myself feel like less than when we're all basically going through the same crap?” ~Audrey Watchiba
“I heard my crew around me singing ‘Here Comes the Sun.’ I heard the swish of water against my kayak, I touched the smooth flow of the waves, and biggest of all, I breathed in the salty air. That was the moment I finally understood how to breathe.” ~Bella Puleo
“I’m very proud to say I will be continuing to quit anything that does not serve me.”
~ Michaella Ishimwe
“Having a kind, loving, and understanding place to learn is what made me thrive …, My decision to attend Casco was one of the best decisions I ever made.” ~Alexey Seredin
“Casco has taught me more about myself than about anything else.” ~Zeke Appel
“[W]ith the unconditional acknowledgment and respect I received from this community came a freedom I’d never experienced before. Freedom to skip and twirl around the Great Space instead of forcing my movements to conform. Freedom to initiate wacky ideas and pursue unusual interests. Freedom to be passionate. Freedom to honor my social limits. Freedom to fly a rainbow flag. Freedom to walk up to any group of people…. So. My advice to incoming students: … come as you are; because no matter who you are, you will be seen, and you will have a place here.” ~ Devyn Shaughnessy

Thank you, Class of 2022, for leading with your words, actions and example. With these Final Words and all that undergirds them, you have helped to both re-establish and re-define Casco’s noblest aims.
Sincerely,
Derek Pierce
Congratulations to the parents of graduates of the Class of 2022! We know some members of the class are still working towards their diploma, and we look forward to supporting them towards this triumphant end in the days and weeks ahead.

Nearly 1/2 in the Class of 2022 have already earned college credit. 15 have earned the STEM Endorsement. Looking ahead 69% plan to enroll in 4 year college, and 27% will be seeking Associate Degrees. 11% will be taking a gap year before college and 13% have travel plans. 33% see work or part-time work and school in their near future.
1 – that’s Alexey’s place in a two mile race with Murray. 1-that's the metric tonnage of mirth produced by the seniors’ performances in Mamma Mia.
19% - that’s the percentage of Class of 2022 grads who earned the Seal of Biliteracy for demonstrating proficiency in 2 languages, the highest in the district. Joice Lumami earned the Seal of Biliteracy in 4 languages, the most in CBHS history.
0 – that’s the amount of dollars that the 12 members of the Class of 2022 who are attending SMCC will pay in tuition next fall if they attend full-time.
99% - that’s the percentage of Class of 2022 graduates accepted to college – 115 different colleges in all. 99% that’s also the likelihood that whatever the issue, Ella could repair it, Jonas could engulf it in flames and Liv could transform it into a really cute jumpsuit. That’s also the percent likelihood that no one in the class of 2022 will ever eat octopus again.
22 - that’s the record number of UPs earned by Devyn Shaughnessy in her junior year (during a pandemic). 8 of those were for college credit. 22 that’s the record number of CBHS seniors who will be attending USM in the fall.
59 – that’s the number of seniors who received a vote from peers to be the Class Speaker, another record.
913,497 that’s the amount of money that the Class of 2022 has earned in grants and scholarships for college next year…. 913 947 – that’s the wattage on Molly’s smile. 913, 497 that’s the number of times the Class of 2022 has had to hear the phrase “due to the Pandemic.”
2022 – that’s the number of consecutive hours that Gregg and Fox have triumphantly sailed around Casco Bay without ever once singing a sea shanty, 2022 pounds, that’s the weight of the Dunkin Donuts glazed cruller required to match the sweetness of Shahad. 2022 that’s the class with a heart so big and inclusive your legacy includes both our beautiful new Muslim prayer space (thank you Fatimah and MSU) and our first ever Queer Art and Activism intensive (thank you Bella and Sasha). A class so generous and wise you bought books to help educate teachers about AAPI culture and history (thank you Deven, Tae Su, Joe, Ria, Rise and ASU), a class so “Best of Casco” that your prank was to camp out around the mockfire in the Great Space and belt Dolly Parton, and 2022 is the class that, after the educational, social and psychic wreckage caused by a year and a half of remote and hybrid learning, has nobly led our school’s resurgence this year, propelling us to double down on meaningful work and meaningful relationships. Class of 2022, we are so grateful that you absolutely and lovingly prevailed.

Hiring Update
We are thrilled to announce that Mulki Hagi will be our new full-time Make It Happen Coordinator. Ms Hagi recently graduated from Bowdoin, majoring in Sociology and Education (and minoring in African Studies). She is a graduate of Deering (and the MIH program) where she was also a Bezos Scholar, one of 17 nationwide. During college winter breaks. Ms. Hagi assisted with Portland High’s Make it Happen. She also engaged in research about the effectiveness of programs similar to Make it Happen in colleges. She described her resulting project, "Battling Elitism in Diverse Spaces" as a "multi-institutional comparative analysis on diversity programs across college and university campuses." Ms. Hagi was also engaged in Bowdoin's Muslim Student Association and is bi-lingual (English and Somali).
Jack Meahl will be one of our dedicated subs next year. Jack graduated from Tufts in 2021 after majoring in psychology and economics. After a stint at UNUM, Jack began subbing at CBHS last spring, and we are very fortunate to have his talents and kindness in our community every day next year. His interests span from the piano-playing to basketball.
In other news, we have completed the interview process for our openings in English. We hope to be able to share news soon. Students and parents are always welcome on our interview panels and thanks to those who have already volunteered. Watch for news of any upcoming panels via e-mail and school messenger.

We shared with students at a June School Meeting that we will be moving to a quarter-based calendar next fall (and ending our trimester system). Faculty have been considering the idea since last spring when it was first proposed by a faculty member; a student-faculty task force then fleshed out a proposal for how it could work this past winter. This proposal was reviewed, revised and ultimately supported by the faculty and approved by our faculty leadership team this spring. Here's what you need know:
What will the year look like?
• Quarter 1 – 9/6 to Veteran’s Day
• Quarter 2 – 11/14 to 2/3
• Quarter 3 – 2/6 till 4/6 (Spring Intensives)
• Quarter 4 – 4/24 (post Spring break) to 6/14
• UPs will be awarded at the end of each Quarter (.5 UPs per typical course)
• Progress Reports - Mid Each Quarter
• Student- Advisor-Parent Conferences - Mid 2nd and 3rd Quarters (Late November and Mid-March)
•Student-Advisor Conferences - Mid 1st and 4th Quarters (October and May)
Note: Both Winter and Spring Intensives Weeks will remain in their typical weeks.
Why make this change?
•More fresh starts for students
•Less opportunity to fall (“hopelessly”) behind
•To promote better habits of work (eg: more timely completion of work)
•So students are no longer working on assignments from months ago
•To better align with other college and high school calendars
•It’s cleaner math: Intensive UPs= Quarter UPs = .5UPs
What else do I need to know?
The nature and length of Expeditions will not change. They may span across 2 quarters and will remain whatever length they need to be.
There will be an INC Period of up to 2 weeks after each quarter during which students may make up unmet standards. The INC Period will only be for students with HOWLS of 3 or higher or extended time approved in IEP/504/MET plans. (This INC Period will replace Frost and Mud Schools.)
Students will need to make good use of Acad and BK 7’s during the Quarter to get help, revise, etc. Those with HOWL’s of 2 will not get additional time once the quarter ends.
Students who do not meet standards in one quarter may sometimes but not always be able to make up that standard in a later quarter – if the standard is recursive (it is assessed again).
We know there will be some bumps as students, staff and families adjust to this new calendar and remediation structures. We will all have some learning (and un-learning) to do. We will use Crew in the fall to have more conversations with students to make sure they are clear about this change and take advantage of the new opportunities this calendar presents.
