Summer 2021
Dear Casco Bay Students, Families and Friends:
Happy summer! It’s hard to reflect on the last school year without talking about you know what - or the last several years without talking about you know who. During their glorious Final Words, the Class of 2021 gathered for the first time all together in 14 months. Yes, they reflected on how they were challenged and strengthened by the crucible of this particular historical juncture, but they were also able to transcend the current moment and coalesce the bigger, deeper lessons and life hacks they’ve forged from their high school years. Since as Matthew Oryem said during his Final Word, “Knowledge speaks but wisdom listens.” I encourage all of us to listen to the Final Words of the Class of 2021. You can view all of them here. Some especially choice excerpts are below:
“I think life is like a painting.... In a painting you begin as a shell of who you are going to be, like the outlining sketch of a piece. Then you take a wash of color and you fill out the surrounding area. You keep coming back to the piece, adding layer after layer of paint to add more details, and when you are tired of painting you rest, but then you go back to face what you’ve started.”
~ Wren Auld-Brokish
“I’m studying for my future so that I'll be proud of myself…. Finally, after 19 years on this earth, I like the woman I'm becoming.”
~ Jennifer Ishimwe
“I remember the first time I attended School Meeting…. I was sitting in my chair [thinking]... ‘What the hell is this? Y’all don’t make fun of each other? Y’all support each other even though you’re not close? AND YOU DO THIS EVERY WEDNESDAY???’ I was freaking out [thinking], ‘Get this positivity away from me; I’m not built for this.' Quite a hypocrite move on my part because two weeks later I was living for it.”
~ Diana Tsiganis
“My proudest accomplishment is being able to change from the kid that didn't care, just wanted the easiest way out, and no one liked to the student that earned good grades, got into his dream college.. and that others like to be around.”
~ Myles Finlay
“ I know my emotions were, are, and will be mine, and that their fluctuations do not define who I am. I do that myself. So… I am still that girl crying in the bathroom or the sleep closet, but I’m also a loyal friend, a communicative partner, a kind stranger, a helpful peer, a lover of art, a rebellious older cousin, a brown-thumbed plant mother, a club leader, a bookworm, a nervous public speaker, and just a person on a journey for self love and acceptance.”
~ Olivia Weeks
“Out of the million things that I’m insecure about, those that truly should be changed can be changed, and those that truly cannot be changed should not be changed.”
~ Charlotte Bowder
“I am ready, and I’ve never felt more prepared for the future than I do at this moment because I finally feel like I know myself.”
~ Leo Oster
“Everything about Casco was just so good it felt like a movie. I had never wanted to come to school and stay so bad[ly] in my life.”
~ Celow Augustino
“...[A]fter four long years of hardships, heartbreaks, tears, blood, sweat, and pouring my all into the work I do, I can proudly say that I have grown. I have grown as a person, a student, a son, and as a friend. I have learned how to take the time to sit down and complete each assignment with full commitment. I’ve gone from being afraid to fail to understanding that it’s necessary to grow. Finally, I’ve accepted that there will always be struggles, but I now know that I can face them. Thank you, Casco Bay, for helping me find my happiness.”
~ Bryson Carter
“I know I want to be successful and give back to the community…. This is the beginning of many beginnings.”
~ Brillant Mercy
“You have to go with you.”
~ Michael Tucker
“[O]nce I apply myself and dive in, what I create from my passions and my mind is something greater than what I thought could be possible.”
~ Dylan Kraekel
“When I pack for college I’ll make sure to fill up my luggage with the relationships I’ve had during high school that I know will last a lifetime. I’ll stuff in the heart-warming memories of Movin’ On Ups and sharing stories with my crew over a campfire. And I’ll fold up and tuck into a front pocket the wonderful skill that Casco has taught me above all else, the skill that reminds me I will be okay no matter how far away from my family I might be - how to make a home.”
~ Maya Denkmire
Thank you to Class of 2021 - and to all the students, staff and families in the CBHS community - for both preserving and re-inventing the CBHS “home” when we’ve needed it most this past fifteen months. It’s been an honor learning and forging community, somehow, persistently, honorably. Together.
Sincerely,
Derek Pierce

In accordance with the latest advisories and guidelines from the Maine Department of Education and the Maine CDC, Portland Public Schools plans to be open this fall for all students for five days a week. In other words, we will be resuming a “normal” school schedule. Distancing requirements have been lifted. We are not yet sure if students will be required to wear masks inside in September. Watch for more details before September. For both individual and collective safety, we do encourage all CBHS students to get fully vaccinated before the start of school. If you need help scheduling an appointment, or want to know if a site near you is offering vaccinations without an appointment, call the Maine COVID-19 Community Vaccination Line at 1-888-445-4111.
The School Board has approved a later start time and end time for PPS high schools for the 2021- 22 school year. The day will now begin at 8:20 and end at 2:50. The School Board will be exploring the possibility of a still later start (about 9am) for the 2022-23 school year.
In addition to the typical college offerings at USM and SMCC, CBHS students may take two new college courses on our campus next fall.
SMCC’s popular Introduction to Psychology course will again be offered on Wednesdays after-school, starting September 1st. The course is open to rising 10th-12th graders and offers the possibility of earning both college credit and CBHS credit (in social studies). Contact Ms. Doyle (doyles@portlandschools.org) or Mr. Hale (halem@portlandschools.org) FMI or to sign up.
Grit Lab: Rising juniors and seniors are eligible to take a course led by world-renowned researcher, Angela Duckworth at the University of Pennsylvania on how to succeed. This course will meet in person during Acads and will also have a Zoom class on Thursday evenings with the professor. Cohorts of EL Education high school students from around the country will also be taking the course and collaborating with CBHS students. The aims of Grit Lab are two-fold: (1) to equip students with generalizable knowledge about the science of passion and perseverance, and (2) to help students apply these insights to their own lives. A syllabus with a recent version of the course is here. This course also offers the possibility of earning both college credit and CBHS credit (in social studies). Contact Mr. Pierce (piercd@portlandschools.org) Ms. Doyle (doyles@portlandschools.org) or Mr. Hale (halem@portlandschools.org) FMI or to sign up.
Feedback is an essential part of the learning process. And we use feedback from student, parent and staff feedback to help identify strengths and areas in need of improvement - as well to inform our next steps. Thanks to everyone who’s shared their ideas and input this spring. Here are some highlights of the results.
Student Survey
About 200 CBHS students completed a brief climate survey this May that has been used nationally for several years. CBHS students responded more positively than national averages on 8 of the 9 questions. Although slightly fewer CBHS students reported feeling “successful at school,” CBHS students more frequently liked school and reported the school having high standards for achievement. When compared to national averages, CBHS students responded most favorably to the question, “I know an adult I can go to if I need help.” When the survey responses are disaggregated, CBHS female students, gay/lesbian students and seniors tended to respond most favorably. On 8 of the 9 questions, there was not a significant difference in how CBHS Black and White students responded. White students did respond more favorably than Black students to the question, “Teachers treat me with respect.”
Parent Survey
117 parents responded to the annual district survey. Thanks! Once again, we had the highest percentage of parents in the district who would recommend us to a friend or neighbor. 67% of parents rated us at the very top, 9 out of 9 (vs. 45% district average). 97% percent of parent respondents said “I feel welcome at this school” (vs 92% nationally) and 93% percent of parents report “at this school, my child feels s/he belongs” (vs. 85% nationally).
Teacher Survey
On the annual faculty survey (“TNTP”), our overall “instructional index score” put us among the very top schools nationally (100%) which, according to the survey correlates with “strong student outcomes” and high retention rates for quality teachers.
After reviewing a raft of student, parent and teacher data and feedback in June, our faculty Leadership Team drafted two priorities for next fall. We will further refine and develop our priorities and related action steps over the summer and share a full school success plan at the outset of school.
Draft CBHS Priorities for 2021-2
1) Return to, and Deepen, EL Education Core Practices:
(Re)learn and practice high leverage instructional moves that lead to mastery of vital skills and knowledge as well as equitable outcomes, particularly in literacy and math.
Preserve and deepen opportunities for all students to do high quality, meaningful work through learning expeditions.
2) Re-Build Community
We will use both what we know about what works in building community and our new learning during the pandemic about the lives and needs of our students to, as President Biden says “build back better.” This initiative will include our efforts to revitalize staff and student relationships as well as supporting student and staff wellness, particularly BIPOC students and staff.

Class of 2021, By the Numbers
In what was the most challenging year in CBHS history to apply to college, the Class of 2021 had perhaps our best year ever with acceptances to 85 colleges and universities and scores of students earning admission to their top choice schools. Over 50% in the Class of 2021 have already earned college credit. 19 have earned the STEM Endorsement. Next fall 65% are heading to 4 year college (including a record 17 heading to USM), 12% will be starting 2 year college, 10% will be taking a gap year before college and 4% plan to head directly into the world of work.
20% - the percentage of Class of 2021 grads who earned the Seal of Biliteracy for demonstrating proficiency in 2 languages, the highest in the district.
9 – that’s the number of senior artists who created the glorious new mural that is the Class of 2021’s gift and legacy.
70.82 that the astounding number of UPs earned by Liliana Frantz, 15.83 in math alone,
99% - that’s the percentage of Class of 2021 graduates who’ve both applied and been accepted to college.
22 - that’s the number of websites created by seniors as part of senior expeditions. It’s also, coincidentally, the number of locals the class interviewed for the People of Portland Project.
47 – that’s the number of seniors who received a vote from peers to be the Class Speaker, a testament to the Class’s deep and diverse leadership
$933,278 that’s the amount of money that the Class of 2021 has earned in grants and scholarships for college next year.

Staffing Update
Low staff turnover and quality hires have been at the core of CBHS success over our first 16 years. After the 2020-21 year in which we had zero turnover (aside from Ms. Woidt’s maternity leave), we do have a more normal year of turnover for the 2021-22 school year, including our first ever retirements (4!) We are so grateful for the remarkable talents, service and caring of our departing staff, including two of our founding faculty, Deb Kierstead (lead secretary) and Peg Richard (art). In keeping with tradition, our faculty appreciation circle included two copies of books for departing staff, one for the staff member and one that will remain in the library, with a name plate in their honor. This year’s appreciation circle was followed by a retirement bash to celebrate our fabulous retirees, Ms. Richard, Ms. Kierstead, Ms. Davis and Ms. Leberman.
Lead Administrative Assistant
Deb Kierstead - Retirement
Liz Meahl - Ms. Meahl (BA from Trinity College) has been the lead administrative assistant at King where she's worked since 2017. Prior to King, Liz worked at Longfellow for 17 years in a slew of roles, including classroom teacher, ed tech, technology coordinator and community coordinator. We welcome Liz's prodigious interpersonal, problem-solving and organizational gifts in our community.
Receptionist (.5)
Gloria Leberman - Retirement
Hermance Kouame - Ms. Kouame earned a BA in Marketing and Management in her home country of Cote D'Ivoire (the Ivory Coast). She was the administrative assistant to a CEO and worked in HR for several years before emigrating to the US in 2017. Hermance will be joining us after a stint with Cheverus Food Services where her supervisor described her as "my absolute best" employee. Hermance is fluent in French as well as English.
Data Specialist (.5)
Sandra Davis - Retirement
Hermance Kouame - Note: We are combining 2 half-time office positions to create Ms Kouame’s one full-time position.
Make it Happen Coordinator (.75)
Sahra Hassan - Ms. Hassan will be attending UMaine Law in the fall.
Sahra Abdirahman - Ms. Abdirahman is a recent graduate of Macalester College where she majored in Education as well as Media & Cultural Studies. Ms. Abdirahman is an alumnus of Deering's Make it Happen program and fluent in Somali.
Math Teacher
Priya Natarajan - Ms. Natarajan has accepted a position to be Portland Public Schools’ first high school math coach (a coach of teachers).
We are scheduled to do interviews for this position on Thursday, July 8th. We are looking for 2 students and 1 parent to join our panel. Contact Mr. Pierce (207-653-6792) FMI.
Art
Peg Richard - Retirement
Alexandra Taraschi - Ms Taraschi (MAT from U. of the Arts) has been teaching in a Philadelphia high school of 4000 students for the last seven years, leading courses from Introductory Art to AP Art. She co-organized the school Art Festival and is a member of her school's Equity team. As an undergrad, she studied art at Pratt and in Milan. She will be re-locating to Maine with her husband and 18 month old daughter, Ophelia.
Special Education
Silas Lunetta - Mr. Lunetta is relocating with his wife to Colorado.
Amanda Vickerson - Ms. Vickerson (BA from Colby and MS from USM) joins us from South Portland High School. She has previously taught special education at both Baxter and Greely Middle School (where she was a mentor for Ms. Regan). Amanda has been lauded by former colleagues and supervisors as a terrific and effective student advocate. One colleague notes, "She is the kind of educator we want to work with every day, not just because she challenges us to be better, but because she makes doing the hard work more fun.”
.5 Social Worker
This is a new position approved in the 2021-22 budget.
We conducted interviews last week and have offered the position to a great candidate.
Chinese
Shufang Liao - Ms. Liao will be returning to China as her visiting teacher visa requires.
We plan to do interviews for this position (shared with Deering) in the coming weeks. Contact Mr. Pierce if you would like to be on this panel.
In other staffing news…
Mr. Leque will be looping up with his crew and joining Team 10 next fall, teaching Sophomore Algebra and Sophomore Pre-Calculus.
Ms. Woidt will be returning to Team 10 to teach physics after a year with her young children. (Thanks to Mr Aponte Clarke for his terrific work filling in during Ms. Woidt’s leave.)
Mr. Ford will get to share his expertise and passion as a professional artist through teaching our Advanced Art course, in addition to teaching Junior Humanities with Ms. McCray.
Ms. Haar (ELL) will be on maternity leave for the first trimester of the 2021-22 school year. Her baby girl Leoni was born on June 29th!
