The Portland Community Orchestra is a non-profit (501c3) organization that was formed to offer a venue where local area musicians can play for each other, enjoy both, classical and popular music, and to perform concerts for the Portland community.
We've come a long way since our first organizational meeting on March 31, 2005. Seven musicians turned out at the Peppermint Twist to get acquainted over a great cup of coffee and to begin planning the Portland Orchestral Society's future.
Today, we have a board of directors and 20 active members, with more joining all the time. We welcome musicians of many age groups and ability levels, ranging from talented middle school students to those who haven't played since high school.
PCO Members Should demonstrate: 1. adequate music reading ability, 2. intermediate technical skills, 3. competent ear for intonation, 4. the ability to produce a quality, characteristic tone on their instrument of choice.
We have guidelines not to discourage future members, but to ensure the musical growth of the ensemble as a whole. A positive attitude and a genuine interest by all players in the PCO are essential in order to foster continued growth and strength for our organization.
The orchestra year coincides with the Portland Public School year. Rehearsal begin the first Thursday after Labor Day through the last Thursday before Memorial Day. Rehearsals are from 7pm to 8:30pm in the Portland High School Band Room located at: 1100 Ionia Road, Portland, MI 48875
