Research Image Competition

Take part in our research image competition to be in with a chance to win up to £300 to help fund your research.

About the competition

The Graduate School Research Image Competition has been established to showcase the research undertaken by doctoral researchers at the University of Portsmouth. The research image should inform, engage and intrigue a non-specialist academic audience and offer a visual perspective on current doctoral research. If your image is shortlisted it will be displayed at the University of Portsmouth Festival of Doctoral Research on 20 June 2019. The competition will be judged by a panel drawn from the University of Portsmouth’s research community.

The winner chosen by the Judging Panel will receive an award of £300 towards their research. The winner of the People’s Choice Award voted for by conference delegates will receive £200 towards their research.

Eligibility – who can apply?

All current doctoral research students, including those undertaking professional doctorates, who have not graduated before 1 June 2019.

Competition guidelines

  • Images must be generated as a result of research carried out during your doctoral studies.

  • Each student can submit only one image. which you can present as a drawing, Photoshop image, photograph, graphic design collage. Though it must be your original image. Please see the University of Sussex competition from 2018 for inspiration.

  • Each student should submit a research image accompanied by a research abstract of no more than 250 words, that explains what your image shows and how it relates to your research.

  • The abstract must be accessible to a non-specialist academic audience.

  • Please send your images as JPEG files.

  • As your work could be printed, we ask that the file sizes be larger than 1MB but smaller than 5MB. Any images outside these parameters may not be considered for the competition.

  • Please note that shortlisted entries will be enlarged to A3 size (the Graduate School will cover printing costs).

  • If your image is selected then you should be able to attend the conference on 20 June 2019. Entrants will be informed if their image has been selected by 14th June 2019.

  • All entries will be viewable online after the competition closing date.

  • Please note if shortlisted, students may be required to undertake Graduate School promotional activities e.g. video for Graduate School website, interview for Graduate School publications, etc.

Submission

Please submit your application to docfest@port.ac.uk by 9am on Wednesday 12th of June, 2019. This must also include:

  • Your research image

  • Your name, student number, faculty and department/school

  • Your Thesis title

  • 250 word abstract to support your image

  • Contact email address

  • Completed consent form
