The UK Engagement Survey is the largest survey in the UK which specifically measures how students spend their time in developmental activity. With more than 5,000 responses across 10 institutions, there are a range of Insights available that feed into the narrative around measuring and maximising development through engagement. The presentation will focus on the 2023 sector results (which have not currently been released), assessing trends in engagement with previous years, but also identifying how different types of undergraduate students engage in different ways - for example, by domicile, ethnicity and other demographic characteristics. We will assess how students are developing skills, and how engagement in specific activities (for example staff-student partnership) is most likely to drive this, for different demographics. We will also analyse how students spend their time in extra-curricular activity and discuss which activities are more strongly linked to development activities and how the cost-of-living crisis may have impacted how students can interact with these specific developmental activities. We will conclude with a collaborative discussion to consider student engagement in the context of these current financial challenges.
