Session Outline:
The integration of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) principles within educational frameworks has become increasingly paramount, acknowledging the multifaceted nature of student experiences. This session at the Mini-Fest will describe the work we have carried out as a department, in relation to students' lived experiences, & exploring the reciprocal relationship between these elements in a higher education setting. We ensured that we embraced all staff teams across the department, to maintain real inclusivity.
EDI, as a philosophy, seeks to create an inclusive environment that values diverse perspectives, dismantles systemic barriers, and fosters equal opportunities for all. In the context of students' lived experiences, EDI serves as a crucial lens through which University staff can comprehend and address individual backgrounds, identities, and challenges. This abstract examines how EDI initiatives can effectively align with and enhance the lived experiences of students studying at the Dental Academy, promoting a more responsive and supportive educational environment.
By acknowledging the unique aspects of students' identities, such as race, gender, socio-economic background, and other intersecting factors, we are trying to cultivate an atmosphere that validates diverse narratives. This abstract emphasizes the role of EDI in creating spaces where students feel seen, heard, and understood, ultimately contributing to a more equitable and enriching educational & clinical journey.
Understanding the interconnectedness of EDI and students' lived experiences becomes pivotal in shaping inclusive educational practices that prepare students for a globally diverse society. This session will underscore the significance of incorporating EDI principles to bridge the gap between institutional/departmental policies and the nuanced realities of students' lives, fostering an educational landscape that reflects human diversity.
