The student experience of assessment and feedback – using focus groups to elicit themes. In this part of the presentation we provide some context for our work on assessment in the law school. We also describe how we designed, undertook and analysed focus groups research to help us to further understand the problem. We describe the staff development session that resulted from this part of the process.
Improving formative feedback – self-evaluation cover sheets and consistent language. In this part of the presentation we discuss the literature regarding the importance of formative feedback and how we sought to improve the engagement with and quality of formative feedback in the law school by more clearly linking the formative task to the summative task and by the use of self-evaluation cover sheets.
Multiple choice questions – challenges and opportunities. In this part of the presentation we discuss the criticisms of MCQs and the conclusion that we reached that they could properly be used to test higher order learning as well as mere recall. We describe the process we undertook to ensure the quality of our multiple-choice exams and we present our findings using one module as a case study. We discuss the next phase of our research.
The aims of the session are to:
Improve analysis of student concerns about assessment and feedback.
Improve the efficacy of formulative feedback.
Make the case for multiple choice exams as part of a wider assessment strategy
