Attention Beginning Teachers (New-to-Education)
Beginning Teachers will participate in a reflective journal for their first year. While this will be a personal reflection and goal selection, you will work closely with your mentor as you navigate your goals for your first year of teaching.
Beginning Teachers will also participate in a book study using "The Beginning Teacher's Field Guide" by Tina Boogren. A copy will be provided on the first day of pre-service. Book Study meetings will be every other month.
Beginning teachers (those with less than one full year of public school teaching experience) will participate in a book study on classroom management based on the bestselling book Beginning Teacher’s Field Guide. Is there a staff handbook?
Yes! We have made our staff handbook digital so ease of access with the ability to provide updates as soon as possible. PCPS Central is broken down in to Human Resources, Instruction & Curriculum, Schools Operations, and an additional page for school administrators.
Where can I find information about benefits and pay schedule?
For all HR information, please check out HR Page in PCPS Central! There, you can find information on employee benefits, policies & procedures, professional growth & licensure information, absence management, pay stubs, etc.
What if my mentor is not accessible and I wonder if I need someone else to help support me?
There are times in which mentors/mentees are not able to meet as frequently as initially thought, or with different background and experiences aren't a good match. It's important that you have someone you can go to and trust. A confidential survey will be sent in September to assess working relationships which is the best time to provide feedback. If it is a more pressing issue, please notify your building administrator who can work with our Professional Learning Supervisor to discuss any changes.
Where do I go for technology help?
There are two ways to seek assistance with technology. For devices, platforms, room setup, phones, etc. the first go-to spot is by submitting a Tech Request. Our IT Department responds very quickly to these requests. To submit a request, visit our Technology Page in PCPS Central. There, you will also find directions if you need them!
If your question is surrounding instruction, you can also seek support from our Instructional Technology Resource Teachers (ITRT's). They also have a Canvas page which helps all of the common troubleshooting questions people have as well as how to set up equipment, instructional platforms, and productivity tools for staff and student usage. Check out their page in PCPS Central to see the complete offerings.
How will I be evaluated?
PCPS follows the guidance of the Virginia Department of Education for observations and evaluations. PCPS has also incorporated additional forms to help with specific roles that the evaluation system derived from the VDOE does not address. The PCPS Teacher Performance Evaluation System Handbook includes all details as well as links to observation and evaluation tools. Additionally, documents can be found on the Professional Growth Page in PCPS Central.
