Every year, there is an event for Nyssma students all over Nassau County. Although this isn’t a POBMS event, our school and town (Plainview Old-Bethpage) had a lot of participants in this program. There is division 1, which is 5th grade, division 2, which is 6th grade, division 3 for 7th and 8th grade, division 4 for 9th and 10th grade, and division 5 for 11th and 12th grade. The students got together at a school to rehearse for 3 days, then have the performance. The school encourages students to continue doing Nyssma so we can have more and more students in All County!
All of us have heard inspirational stories of people with disabilities overcoming adversity. But how many of us have actually met such a person?
The students of Plainview-Old Bethpage Middle School recently were able to enjoy such an experience, meeting motivational speaker Rohan Murphy.
Rohan was born with deformed legs, which were amputated when he was young. But Rohan has pushed himself to persevere through these challenges. As a middle schooler, Rohan was the manager of various school teams. But in high school, his coach encouraged him to be a part of their wrestling team. Rohan was a strong wrestler in high school and college, and now uses his experiences to encourage others to pursue their dreams.
Rohan used fun displays, videos, and demonstrations to describe his experiences. He even demonstrated his wrestling techniques with the help of several volunteers. Rohan’s mesmerizing story truly is inspiring, and pushes all students to work their hardest to achieve their goals.
