Today is Global Tiger Day. Tigers lost more than 95% of its habitat worldwide. But from 2010 to 2022, India has doubled its tiger population, thanks to meticulous planning and concerted efforts. With 3,167 tigers, India is home to over 70% of world tiger counts. This year India is celebrating golden jubilee year of Project Tiger which was launched in 1973.                            HAPPY GLOBAL TIGER DAY

#International Tiger Day was observed on 29.07.2023.

Few facts on tiger:

1. Globally more than 95% of tiger habitat is lost.

2. India is home to 70% of world tiger counts.

3. From 2010 to 2022 India has doubled its tiger population.

4. India's  tiger population now is 3,682.

5. Bengal home to 103 tigers, 101 in #Sundarban (SB) and 2 in North Bengal.

6. SB has a carrying capacity of 4.7 tigers per sq. km. which is closer to the limit.

7. There are 53 tiger reserve forests in India, which is almost 2% of India's total geographical area.

8. Only salt water drinking tigers in the world are  SB tigers. (Which they are compelled to)

9. SB tigers get only 6 hours in a day for hunting, mating and resting time because of high tide.

10. During high tides cubs often get carried away by water. Only one out of 3 to 4 cubs can be saved by mother tigress.

11. During  low tides when they are most active for hunting they are targeted by poachers.

12. SB tigers are the only species in the world which have to struggle so hard for their survival, unlike other tigers in India barring Siberian tigers.

13. For hunting they can not chase their prey. They have to wait and jump on the prey when it gets closer.

14. Due to high tides, smell of  their body, which demarcates their territory, gets washed away. It makes difficult for them to identify their territory properly.

15.  Mother tigress have to fight hard to hide their cubs from the tigers. Male cubs are most prone to be eaten away by the tigers to ensure their future area dominance.
