Best Practices of the Department of Mathematics
A. Title: ICT Based Teaching and learning
The Context: The teaching method is a very important parameter that comprises the principles and methods used by teachers to enable student learning. It helps to focus more on teaching the students to enhance and improve their intellect behaviour by using various new ideas rather than making them recite the syllabus to clear the exam.
Infact Technology has disrupted all areas of our life and education is no different. Especially after the pandemic, more institutions are looking towards online learning as a permanent teaching method along with traditional classroom teaching. But while most of the institutes have used some form of online teaching in the past year, they lack a systematic approach to virtual learning.
Objectives:
Using information technology in education has made it possible for students to keep on learning, irrespective of where they are.
Teachers and professors can send assignments to students and they can complete and submit them even without physically stepping into the classrooms and so learning never has to stop.
The use of information technology in education has become more than just an option.
For effective learning, the education sector stakeholders have found ways of integrating the use of information technology in the everyday learning processes.
Some of the important uses are
Easy sharing of knowledge
Continuous learning
Distance learning
Sharing study materials
Proper recording and video conferencing facility.
The Practices:
The institution has a clear objective to train the faculty members with the new concepts and tools of ICT. So, there is an ample opportunity and sufficient facilities to use ICT in teaching learning procedure. Accordingly facilities are provided to the learners:
ICT Classes: The department has ICT enabled classroom with overhead projector which is used for most of the classes in combination with the traditional Chalk Board method.
Online Classes: Online classes are organised to suppliment the offline classes. At lockdown period all the claaes were orgnised in online mode.
Online Attendance and Academic Monitoring:
The department has a good practice to register online attendance since the session 2017-18. Online Academic Monitoring is also another aspect of the department which is maintained regularly.
Departmental Website: The department bears an effective website with full of information along with a good amount of uploaded teaching learing materials.
Learning Management System: The department uses the LMS introduced centrally by the institution for teaching learning and Evaluation.
Google Classrooms: It is used for sharing information and teaching learning materials.
Audio Visual: YouTube videos prepared by the faculty member are shared to the students to make the learning process simple and interesting.
ICT based taring for the students: Students are trained to prepare PPTs and Projects or Posters, to use Microsoft Word and Excell etc. Students are oriented to use Google Drive, Google forms, Google slides and other requires applications.
Departmental Online Journal: There is a departmental journal named "Aryabhatta Journal of Science" for publication their review works and research works.
Beside these social media Application like WhatsApp and Telegram are used to share information and materials
Evidence of Success:
Regular online classes started within a week of the enforcement of lock down.
Teacher Exchange programmes are organised mainly in online mode.
All the students are able to access the online materials uploaded by the faculty member of the department in LMS, Departmental Website , Google Classroom and other places.
Google forms and other required applications are used for continuous internal evaluation. Students are made able for self evaluation through the questionaire prepared using Google Forms.
Students are able to submit their answer scripts through online mode.
PPT are used for almost all the classes.
Learning outcomes analysis are measured through PO CO attainment using ICT.
Students participate in Students' Seminar and present their topics using PPT.
Students publishes their work in the online Departmental Journal.
B. Title: Popularising Mathematics and Free Coaching for Basic Mathematical Abilities for Entry in Services
The Context:
Math is incredibly important in our lives and, without realizing it, we use mathematical concepts, as well as the skills we learn from doing math problems, every day. The laws of mathematics govern everything around us, and without a good understanding of them, one can encounter significant problems in life.
We can mention a few reasons that math is a powerful and incredibly useful tool
Learning math is good for your brain.
Math helps you tell time.
Math helps you with your finances.
Math makes you a better cook (or baker).
Math helps us have better problem-solving skills.
Math is used in practically every career in some way.
Math is all around us and helps us understand the world better.
Still there are some irrational fear and avoidance of mathematics. So it is necessary to overcome these inability or anxiety through the demonstration of beauties of mathematics.
On the other hand employability is the transferable skills needed by an individual to make them employable. Employability relates to your knowledge, skills, and attitudes, how you use those assets, and how you present them to employers in today's context.
Today, your education and experience may only be enough to qualify for a job, but to be successful in most roles in the field of emerging areas, you will need skills like communication, teamwork, and problem-solving. These soft skills that will equip you to carry out your role in the company to the best of your ability are also referred to as employability skills.
The building blocks of any career, these skills are what make you employable across various roles, sectors, and industries. Employers usually want to see that you already have these soft skills before hiring, because they are much harder to teach.
Improving mathematical skills will definitely increase one's chances for professional success, no matter what career path you pursue.
Many professionals use mathematical skills directly in their day-to-day duties without realizing it.
Even for the rare jobs that never directly deal with numbers and figures, you’ll often need the same problem-solving and critical thinking abilities used in math to succeed.
This leads the department to be associated with a training programme for the students of the institution. Initially it was named as “Entry in Services ” . Presently it is run as “Employability Skills”
Objectives:
We cover the most important mathematical skills to master for the workplace. One will also learn how to improve mathematical skills and highlight them during the job-search process.
These sets of job-readiness skills are, in essence, behaviors that are necessary for every job and are essential attitudes that enable someone to grow in your career and also efficiently help one:
To overcome math-phobia
To apply mathematics in real life.
To gain the popularity of mathematics in ancient india
To connect with co-workers
To solve problems
To be a part of and understand one’s role within the team
To make responsible choices for his/her job and one’s career
To be independent and take charge of one’s career
The practices:
The departmental website provides a webpage on “Mathematics for All “ which contains two subpages on “Vedic Mathematics” and “Everyday Mathematics” with information on the related subjects to encourage students coming from the disciplines other than mathematics for gaining the application of mathematics we do every day in our practical life.
Popular talk and Wall Magazine on Mathematics:
The department organises seminars on popular talks on mathematical concepts for the students.
The department conducts the campaign “Saturday Mathematics” held on each Saturday at the college premises for the students to talk on mathematics and to engage them with some critical thinking.
The Departmental website displays a dedicated page for Competitive Mathematics full of materials. Students are encouraged to follow the page for regular practices.
The faculty member is associated with the Add-on course for Free Coaching for Entry in Services/Employability Skill offered by the institution every year for the students and acts as the Convener or Co-ordinator for the said course. The classes for Basic Mathematics Skills are taken by the faculty member of the department.
