Why Global Education

We live in a global world!

  • One in five jobs is tied to international trade
  • The United States has 40 million people who are foreign born
  • Global learning encourages awareness and critical thinking
  • Understanding and connecting with others promotes peace
  • There are around 200 different nations on Earth.
  • We are all citizens of the world

"In a 21st century world where jobs can be shipped wherever there’s an Internet connection … a child born in Dallas is now competing with a child in New Delhi.” — President Barack Obama

I realized global education was essential during the 2015 Ebola outbreak. I was dumbfounded by the hysteria and misinformation that most people believed concerning Ebola. I took this opportunity to have my honors biology students create a Informational panel that looked at Ebola from a 360 lens. I realized that examining an issue in isolation naturally narrowed the depth of understanding on any topic. The importance of understanding all aspects of any issue is crucial to not only being educated on the topic but also to making changes. One can't understand the Ebola outbreak unless the history, science, economics, politics, cultural, geography and geology etc.. are taken into account. This not only relates to Ebola, but any issue/topic we are examining such as: political unrest, humanitarian issues, environmental problems, diseases, genetics, opiate crisis..... If you take anyone of these topics and look at it without examining all aspects related to it you will end with a very one-sided and biased understanding.
