Incredibly, Malorie Blackman, although a prolific reader, did not read a single book with a black character in it until she was in her early 20's...imagine never reading a single book, with any white characters in it - how would you feel?

Tomi Adeyemi is another author from our HOGWARDS. Incredibly she is just 26 years old and already has a New York Times best seller - her debut novel - 'Children of Blood and Bone'. After graduating from Harvard University (a very prestigious American university) with an honours degree in English Literature, she went on to study African mythology and culture in Salvador, Brazil; this is where she got the inspiration for her book.

Kwame Alexander
Kwame Alexander
One of our favourite authors, at Plymstock library, to get students into reading, is Kwame Alexander. His brilliant use of verse instead of prose, and his modern and engaging storylines are the perfect remedy for any reluctant reader - they are also just really great books for anyone who loves reading :)

Kwame Alexander talks about his writing and why he writes novels in verse - he's a fabulous speaker...especially when he talks about librarians (he clearly knows exactly what he is talking about! :D)

"I don't just want to read about black children in 'issue-based' narratives. Why can't black children exist in 'white' genres? Why can't they see themselves being clever, creative and having fun?"
