Boys Don't Cry

Chasing the Stars

Here, Malorie talks about her book 'Boys Don't Cry' - a very powerful book and one of my favourites

Malorie Blackman talks about her book 'Double Cross' part of the critically acclaimed 'Noughts and Crosses' series.

In this video clip, Malorie Blackman talks about how she got her first book published, which really highlights the importance of resilience.

Incredibly, Malorie Blackman, although a prolific reader, did not read a single book with a black character in it until she was in her early 20's...imagine never reading a single book, with any white characters in it - how would you feel?

After graduating from Harvard University (a very prestigious American university) with an honours degree in English Literature, she went on to study African mythology and culture in Salvador, Brazil; this is where she got the inspiration for her book.

Sharna Jackson

High Rise Mystery

For more information on this brilliant book, go to

Sharna Jackson is an author as well as the Artistic Director at the Site Gallery in Sheffield, where she is passionate about engaging children in the arts. Growing up, Sharna loved old detective stories but also wanted to write a story 'where young diverse people can see themselves and doing interesting things." '

"When I read, the default in my head was 'white'. Unless the character was black, it wouldn't be stated. '

Sharna Jackson (BBC April 2019)

"I don't just want to read about black children in 'issue-based' narratives. Why can't black children exist in 'white' genres? Why can't they see themselves being clever, creative and having fun?"

Sharna Jackson (BBC April 2019)

The Bookwanderers Club interviews Sharna Jackson about the next book in the 'High Rise Mystery', 'Mic Drop'.

'Mic Drop' was released on 2nd April and will be available from Plymstock School library when we return :) It also can be purchased online...
