Themes

The book Frindle by Andrew Clements explores several themes. 

Honesty

• Honesty earns respect from others and encourages others to be honest too.

• An honest atmosphere creates a positive and supportive environment for families, schools, and workplaces. 

Creativity 

• The importance of creativity, even when faced with opposition

• The idea that "anything is possible" embodies the concepts of dream big, never give up, believe in yourself, learn and explore, work together, and have fun.

• Imagination can lead to greatness!

Responsibility

• Nick finds himself in the spotlight after inventing a new word, but it's difficult to manage the responsibility. 

• Mrs. Granger's overreaction to Nick's new word causes it to have a bigger effect than it would have otherwise. 

Respect

• Showing kindness and consideration to others and to yourself helps to build an atmosphere that promotes creativity and teamwork.

• Treat others and yourself well, listen actively, respect boundaries, be honest, fair and polite. 

The value of words

• The value of words is a theme in Frindle. 

• Words are used to think with, to write with, to dream with, to hope and pray with. 

• The relationship between power and language can be used to influence, tell a story, express feelings and ideas, and to show empathy and understanding.  Choose your words carefully; they are powerful!

Leadership and teamwork 

• The novel focuses on the value of collective action- strength in numbers that encourages and supports a common goal or idea.

• Working together towards a common goal is one of the best ways to achieve success.
