Family Discussion Questions

Each book has a bookmark sheet inside.  Please use the bookmarks as a reflection area. Read or listen to the chapters and jot down a thought, an idea, draw a picture about the chapter OR respond to a few of the chapter questions. Please submit the completed bookmark on each due date to have your child/family entered in a drawing.  If you misplace the bookmarks please feel free to use any paper or click this link for a new copy. 

Chapters 1-5 Questions - Due Monday, April 7th  

Chapter 1:  Do you think Nick is a troublemaker? Do you think the other kids like what he does in the classroom to his teacher? What do you think about pranks? Have you ever played pranks on your family members or classmates? 

Chapter 2:  Would you like to be in Mrs. Granger’s class? What is your class like this year? 

Chapter 3:  Do you think Mrs. Granger is mean? Why or why not? 

Chapter 4:  What are the rules at your house? How do you feel about Nick's “homework first” rule at his house? Why did his parents think that was so important? How do you think Nick is going to make his report special? 

Chapter 5:  Have you ever been nervous about reading in front of the class? How did you handle it? How did Nick make his report special? try to prank Mrs. Granger when he gave his report?

Chapters 6-10 Questions- Due Wednesday, April 23rd

Chapter 6:  What is Nick’s big idea? (With the pen?) Do you think calling a pen a frindle will work? What new “word” can you create to use in your family? April 8th- LOOK for the New Word Challenge

Chapter 7:  How do you think Mrs. Granger felt about the new word? How can you tell? What would you rename in your classroom? 

Chapter 8:  What do you think about the 5th-grade class picture? Do you think the students should get in trouble for using the word “frindle” in school? Why or why not? What do you think Mrs. Granger's letter says?

Chapter 9:  Are there any rules that seem a little silly? What are they? Ask your parents if there were rules they had to follow that you thought were silly when they were a kid.  What do you think about Nick's though grenade 'ain't'?

Chapter 10:  Why do you think Judy Morgan went to the school? Why do you think Mrs. Granger was so upset about the word “frindle”? Do you think Judy Morgan’s newspaper article will be FOR Nick and “frindle” or AGAINST him? Why?

Chapters 11-15 Questions- Due Monday, May 5th

Chapter 11:  How do you think things changed for Nick AFTER the article came out in the newspaper? How do you think Judy Morgan got the 5th-grade picture? What does Free Speech mean? 

Chapter 12:  How did Nick feel about everyone using his word? Nick earns money by mowing lawns for his neighbors. What kinds of chores could you do to earn money? Share how you made money when you were a kid.

Chapter 13:  What word did the kids get wrong on every spelling test? 

Chapter 14:  What was Nick’s next idea? Why did he decide NOT to follow through with his new idea? What is your favorite breakfast or lunch option from school? At the end of the school year, Mrs. Granger said Nick was one of her favorite students. Do you have a favorite teacher? Discuss the favorite teachers of all your family members. What's your favorite school memory?

Chapter 15:  What two important things happened to Nick? How could you get your new word into the dictionary? What was the gift Mrs. Granger sent to Nick? What was his gift for her? What future things do you think will exist that do not exist today? Share what we use today that you didn’t use as a kid.
