6th Grade Curriculum

Elements of Music

Melody

Students will use the Google Assisted Melody App to create unique original melodies to share. Student will also listen to various vocal arrangements to identify the melody in a piece of music.

rhythm

Students will use Google Beat Blender to create and experiment with unique rhythms. Students will also listen to various percussion and rhythm clips to identify the rhythm section in a piece of music.

Harmony

Students will use virtual choir examples to visualize and analyze harmonies in vocal music. Students will also study several examples of harmony in specific small music groups.

Form

Students will use the song "Happy" by Pharrell Williams to both analyze and identify form in a piece of music.

Timbre

Students will listen to and analyze various instrumental and vocal examples to identify different types of timbre in music.

6th Grade Regular Curriculum

Unit 1: Intermediate Ukulele Techniques

6th grade students start the school year off with intermediate ukulele classes for 9-10 weeks. During that time, they reinforce the 4 beginning chords: C, Am, F and G. Additionally, they will add more chords to their playing rotation: Dm, Em, D and G7.


Ohio 6th grade standards met during this instructional unit:

2PR Play a variety of classroom instruments, independently or collaboratively, with increasingly complex rhythms and melodic phrases.

1PR Independently or collaboratively, perform with good posture and breath control a varied repertoire of music representing diverse cultures with appropriate dynamics and tempo.

5CE Distinguish between and among the use of dynamics, meter, tempo and tonality in various pieces through active listening.

5PR Read, write, perform and compose rhythm patterns and simple melodies in 2/4, 3/4, 4/4 and 6/8 meter.

Unit 2: Composing/Arranging with Soundtrap

Similar to Soundation Studio, Soundtrap offers web-based creation software with several new features. Students build on their prior knowledge of creating music and add these extra features to create new, original music.

3CE Identify different functions and uses of music in American and other cultures.

Unit 3: Music History (1980's-Present)

Students build on their prior knowledge of music history by adding a few more decades into the mix. In chronological order, students learn about key people, groups and bands that have shaped the current musical landscape we to which we have all become accustomed.
