5th Grade Curriculum

Elements of Music

Melody

Students will use Google Song Maker to create original melodies and share them. Students will listen to various vocal arrangements to identify the melody in a piece of music.

Rhythm

Students will use Google Rhythm Creator to create unique original rhythms of their own. Students will also listen to various percussion and rhythm clips to identify the rhythm section in a piece of music.

Harmony

Students will use the Google Assisted Melody App to create a melody and form unique harmonies that fit the melody they created. Students will also listen to various recording of harmonic vocals to hear what layered harmonies sound like in a piece of music.

FORM

Students will use the song "Happy" by Pharrell Williams to both analyze and identify form in a piece of music.

TIMBRE

Students will listen to various clips of different vocal and instrumental arrangements to analyze and identify different timbres and tone colors.

5th Grade Regular Curriculum

Unit 1: Beginner Ukulele Techniques

5th grade students start the school year off with beginner ukulele classes for 9-10 weeks. During that time, they learn the 4 beginning chords: C, Am, F and G. Lessons will be taught via YouTube video. You will need to SUBSCRIBE to my YouTube channel to participate in this unit.

2PR Perform, on instruments, a varied repertoire with accurate rhythm and pitch, appropriate expressive qualities, good posture and breath control.

1CE Explore and identify musical instruments from different historical periods and world cultures.

3CE Identify terms related to form (e.g., D.C. and D.S. al Fine; D.C. and D.S. al Coda; repeat signs, first and second endings).

1PR Sing a varied repertoire with accurate rhythm and pitch, appropriate expressive qualities, good posture and breath control

Unit 2 : Composing/Arranging with Soundation Studio

Students create original music using the Soundation Studio software. This web-based program allows students to work and save files on any device. They must create original songs pulling from over 500 different beat, bass, synth loops (and more!). The finished product is a full-length song which can be shared and downloaded freely.

Unit 3 - Music History (1950's-1970's)

During this unit, students will learn the history of Rock n' Roll, Motown and more! Each class is a study on a particular person or group, in chronological order. We discuss the life, music and accomplishment of each significant historical figure and rock out to some of their music!
