Object Name: Binnacle
Object ID: 95.660.3
Date: 1957
Description: This cylindrical shaped binnacle has a wooden base with a brass bottom to bolt it to the ship's deck. It has a conical, tarnished brass top with a glass window to allow the helmsman to view inside, where the compass is housed during sailing voyages. The binnacle is tall, standing at nearly four and a half feet, facilitating easier viewing of the compass. This particular binnacle came over on Mayflower II during the 1957 voyage, although the compass has since been removed.
