Writing

Our first writing unit is Narrative Writing. Students write about small moments in their life, adding multiple important and interesting details. The second unit is Informational Writing. Students research and organize information to tell a reader all they know about a topic. The third unit is Opinion Writing. Students state their opinion on a topic and are able to support their opinion with multiple reasons.

What your child should be doing in his/her writing:

πŸ˜€ Write at least 3 or more ideas on 1 topic. Usually students will write at least 6 sentences including an opening and a closing sentence.

πŸ˜€ Think of a good way to start your writing (tell the reader what your writing will be about...ask a question ie: Let me tell you about...On Saturday morning...Did you know)

πŸ˜€ Use transition words to keep the story in order (first, next, then, also, last, finally)

πŸ˜€ Please check for capitals, periods and reread your the words in your sentences to make sure they makes sense. How will the reader know you finished writing one sentence and are starting another? Listen to yourself read. Does your voice stop? You might need another period.

πŸ˜€ Re-read your writing. Does each sentence make sense? Did you use transition words? Did you stay on topic?

πŸ˜€ Draw a picture that gives lots of information as well. Think about adding details, labels and speech bubbles to help your reader understand more about your writing.
