What is Navy JROTC?
NJROTC is a U.S. Navy-affiliated program that uses military values and activities to encourage students (“cadets”) to develop character, patriotism, self-discipline, work ethic, and teamwork.
Is Navy JROTC a class?
Yes. NJROTC is an elective class that is part of a cadet’s daily schedule, similar to any other high school class. Instructors are retired Navy sailors who are also teachers certified by the State of Nebraska. This class counts as the district requirement for one of the three PE classes that students are required to take.
What does Navy JROTC do?
In class, students learn about the Armed Forces and their history, work on military skills, and participate in physical education. In addition, there are a number of NJROTC teams and activities, some of which compete against other local and regional programs. These include our Color Guard, Drill Teams, Athletics Team, Marksmanship Team, and Drones Team.
Do I need to be interested in military service to join?
No. We are not recruiters and do not pressure cadets to enter the military. Many of our cadets have no interest in the Armed Forces as a career, or are not medically eligible to serve, and that is OK. We welcome all students who are interested in using our framework of military values and traditions to develop their character and life skills, no matter their post-graduation plans.
That said, any students who are considering military service will benefit from NJROTC. By learning about the Armed Forces and participating in military activities, they can determine if the military is for them, and which branch and community might best suit them.
There are also practical benefits to joining NJROTC: each branch of the Armed Forces offers enlistment at a higher rank and pay level for those who were NJROTC cadets in high school.
What is the time commitment?
Other than attend class daily, the only time requirement is that each cadet perform at least ten hours of community service. Our program coordinates opportunities for cadets to fulfill this requirement in the school district and community. If a cadet has a cause or activity that qualifies, that may be coordinated through the NJROTC leadership.
Although the minimum commitment is not onerous, NJROTC is most rewarding when cadets are involved in our extracurricular activities. All cadets are encouraged (but not required) to belong to at least one competitive team.
Who can join?
Any students who are enrolled at either Papillion – La Vista High School (Monarchs) or Papillion – La Vista South High School (Titans) may join. Homeschool students in the Papillion – La Vista Community Schools district are also welcome; they can register via the school district.
What does it cost?
Nothing. There is no fee to participate. Uniforms and other materials are provided free of charge.
What does NJROTC require beyond a typical class?
As a military-themed program, our cadets wear a Navy uniform to school once per week. The importance of professional appearance requires cadets to meet Navy grooming standards.
Physical fitness is a military value and we work with our cadets to constantly improve. But don’t worry – we don’t expect you to be an elite athlete; the goal is to consistently make incremental progress, no matter the level at which you begin. You will be expected to participate in workouts, and try your best.
How does NJROTC work for Monarchs students?
Our first-year and second-year Monarch cadets are enrolled in our 1st Period class at Titans. Bus service is provided to and from Monarchs to ensure they can arrive to class on-time. Third-year and fourth-year Monarch cadets carpool to our 5th Period class at Titans.
Why should I join?
Three reasons:
1. NJROTC develops the classic military values of self-discipline, work ethic, attention to detail, and teamwork. These values are conducive to success in every facet of life: academic, career, social, and personal.
2. NJROTC has practical benefits. Participants who enlist after graduation enter the military at a higher rank and are paid more. For those interested in college ROTC programs, NJROTC participation strengthens an ROTC scholarship application. And, similar to other leadership development programs, NJROTC participation looks good on an application to college.
3. NJROTC is a great way to meet people and make friends. Outside of class, we have many opportunities for competitions, field trips, and social events.
