Advanced Placement Program

Plainville High School is proud to participate in the Advanced Placement program. The Advanced Placement program is owned by CollegeBoard which has very specific guidelines that are required of all the participating schools around the country, including the cost, dates and times of the exams. The AP program is intended to provide high school students with an opportunity to experience a college level curriculum. While the AP test is a standardized measure of a student’s knowledge base in specific content areas.

Each AP course concludes with a college-level exam developed, and scored, by college faculty members and AP teachers. This exam enables students to apply new critical thinking skills. Most two- and four year recognize the AP scores in the admission process and accept successful exam scores for credit, advanced placement in college, or both.

AP Calculus BC

Advanced Placement Calculus BC includes all the topics of Calculus AB plus the following additional topics: parametric; polar; and vector functions; analysis of planar curves given in parametric form; polar form; and vector form; including velocity and acceleration; derivatives of parametric; polar and vector functions; numerical solutions of differential equations using Euler’s method; L’Hopital’s Rule including its use in determining limits and convergence of improper integrals and series; applications of integrals; antiderivatives by substitution of variables; parts; and simple partial fraction decomposition; and improper integrals; convergence/divergence of a series; integral test; p-test; comparison of series; alternating series test; ratio and root tests; Taylor Polynomials; power series; Taylor and Maclaurin Series.

AP Statistics

This is a very rigorous full year, college level mathematics course. The areas of Descriptive Statistics and Inferential Statistics will be examined thoroughly. Topics will include frequency distributions, measures of central tendencies and variations, probability, expectations, random sampling, the experimental design process, tests of hypotheses, class intervals, linear regression, non-linear regression and analysis of variance. The mathematics of Statistics has become the fastest growing mathematics application in recent years with all colleges requiring undergraduates to take Statistics.

AP Technology Courses

AP Computer Science

This course introduces students to the foundational concepts of computer science and challenges them to explore how computing and technology can impact the world. The course develops students' awareness and appreciation of cultural products (e.g., tools, books, music, laws, conventions, institutions); practices (patterns of social interactions within a culture); and perspectives (values, attitudes, and assumptions).

AP Exam Scoring

About AP Scores

AP Exams are scored on a scale of 1 to 5. Many U.S. colleges grant credit and/or advanced placement (that means they let you skip the equivalent course once you get to college) for scores of 3 and above.
