The Library is not only an exciting place to engage with books, but also a dynamic hub for digital learning. Plainedge School Library Media Specialists are a valued partner in integrating the New York State Digital Fluency standards in our district. By fostering digital literacy, librarians ensure that students navigate technology ethically and effectively. Through interactive lessons and the use of diverse tools and platforms, librarians help students develop essential skills in coding, media literacy, digital citizenship, and more.
Media Literacy 101
Helping students critically analyze media is a cornerstone of the digital fluency standards. Lessons include spotting misinformation, decoding advertising techniques, and understanding biases in news sources.
Ready for Research
Students are taught to locate information from various multimedia sources. By introducing reliable databases and demonstrating how to evaluate digital resources, students learn how to effectively locate the information they need.
Practicing Digital Citizenship
Lessons on topics like online safety, digital footprints, and cyberbullying emphasize the responsibilities that come with online interactions. These lessons build skills for participating in the digital world safely and responsibly.
Graphic Design
Using Canva, students are taught how to design posters, infographics, and presentations--combining creativity with technology skills. By exploring templates and layouts, students learn to communicate ideas visually. This aligns with standards that emphasize creating and sharing digital content effectively.
Coding with Kidoyo
With Kidoyo, coding concepts are introduced to our students in an engaging, gamified way. By using such Kidoyo apps as Maze Code, Sprite Editor, and Hatch, students are building their confidence and proficiency in programming while problem-solving and using their creativity.
Explore the World with Google Earth
Google Earth brings geography to life, Library lessons often include virtual field trips, allowing students to explore historical landmarks or map out the origin of a fairy tale. These activities foster critical thinking and align with standards for using technology to analyze and interpret data.
Keyboarding for Kids
Students are introduced to keyboarding through interactive lessons and games that emphasize proper finger placement, typing speed, and accuracy. These skills enhance digital literacy, helping students become more efficient in using technology for academic tasks and beyond.
Coming soon: AI
Artificial intelligence offers exciting opportunities to teach emerging technology. Students can explore age-appropriate AI tools while learning its impact on society. Ethical considerations, such as data privacy and bias in AI will also be covered, aligning with digital fluency standards on responsible technology use.
