letters and diaries

While Mary was imprisoned for 19 years she wrote lots of letters to people. Many of her supporters wanted to help her escape. Anthony Babington and six friends plotted to free Mary and murder Elizabeth. To stop their letters being read by other people Babington created a cipher to replace the alphabet using 23 symbols for letters and 35 symbols for words or phrases the letters however were intercepted by Francis Walsingham and Gilbert Gifford who broke the code ultimately leading to the death of Babington and Mary her self.

We have been learning that Mary loved to write letters and kept a diary until her death. In class we have been writing our own diary entries putting ourselves in Mary's shoes
