Major Concepts/Content

Spanish 1 introduces students to the target language and its culture.

The student will develop communicative skills in all 3 modes of communication and cross-cultural

understanding.

Emphasis is placed on proficient communication in the language.

An introduction to reading and writing is also included as well as culture, connections, comparisons, and communities.

Areas of Study:

Students will learn to:

Speak and understand, using basic vocabulary within context of everyday situations.

Use grammatical structures within the context of topics.

Create vocabulary lists, original dialogues, notes and letters related to topics.

Appreciate and compare Spanish-speaking cultures.

Culture and customs of the Spanish speaking world are taught throughout the year.


General Expectations:

Speak Spanish as much as possible.

Be on time: come ready to participate and learn (and let others learn).

Have assignments ready the day they are due (in class work).

Participate: be an active learner and enjoy the process.

Be respectful: use appropriate language and behave when you interact with the teacher, classmate or in the classroom.

Note: This book will be used as a frame of reference for the class. The course will be complemented with additional resources provided by the teacher.

Grading:

Daily work (class room work) – 40%

Quizzes – 25%

Test – 15%

Oral – 10%

Participation / General Behavior – 10%

Notebook (no binder)

Pencils /erasers

Highlighters

Coloring pencils or crayons

Scissors

Glue/ Glue stick

Note: Sharing school supplies will not be allowed (each student must bring their own school supplies).
