Answer Key

Activity 1

Go to the following sites and look for their terms and conditions/ user agreements. Find out if they are legal for kids under the age of 13.

According to the Terms of Service, Animoto users should be ages 13 and up. Animoto's privacy was rated by Common Sense Media.

G Suite for Education is COPPA compliant.

According to the Terms of Service, Remind has policies for students under and over age 13. Remind's privacy was rated by Common Sense Media.

According to the Terms of Service, Powtoon users under the age of 18 must use the PowToon 4 Edu version.

Activity 2

Go to the following sites and determine why/if they might be blocked in a school in order to comply with CIPA.

Answers will vary for Skype, Dropbox, or Khan Academy because Internet safety policies vary. Skype and/or Dropbox could potentially be deemed inappropriate because they are direct electronic communications. Khan Academy is hosted on YouTube and some safety policies could deem that inappropriate because it could give minors access to harmful material on other YouTube channels/videos. If an Internet safety policy restricts a site because of safety concerns, it could be blocked at school.

Activity 3

Read the scenario below and discuss with a partner to determine if this is legal.

A 17 year old high school senior wants to apply for a scholarship. The scholarship asks for personal records including any law enforcement unit records. The student disagrees with this and does not want to release any records of that kind because he feels it is a FERPA violation. However, his parents send in the records anyway in hopes of getting the scholarship for their child. Were any laws broken?

No laws were broken. The student is under 18; he is not an "eligible student" with control over his own records. The parents still control the educational records with any identifiable information. However, law enforcement unit records are not considered educational records and do not fall under the protection of FERPA.

Activity 4

Read the scenario below and discuss with a partner to determine if this is legal.

A school sends a letter to parents to inform them that their 6th grade children will be taking a survey. The data of the survey will remain local and flag possible at-risk behavior. The students take the survey and complain to their teachers and parents about the sexual content of the survey. The principal sends another letter to parents to inform them they were in PPRA compliance because the parents had been notified in writing before the survey. Were any laws broken?

Yes, the law was broken by the school. Notifying the parents in writing is a good step but because questions of sexual behavior were asked, parents should have been given a copy of the survey ahead of time and been given an opportunity to opt out. Also, if this survey was federally funded, then parents would be required to provide written consent before taking the survey.

Activity 5

Read the scenario and decide how the teacher should proceed.

A teacher wants to try a flipped lesson. She uses a recording of herself to post online so that students can access it anywhere. The content in the video is essential knowledge for the next class period. What precautions should the teacher make with her video?

Answers could vary but to be WCAG compliant, all videos should contain accurate subtitles. If visual elements are used in the video, they should be verbally described.
