Reading sparks the imagination! In fourth grade it is our expectation that students read at least 100 minutes per week. Allow your child to read books of their interest. Chapter books are the preferred options to read independently or with your child. Spark your child's curiosity by making predictions or changing the outcome of a story.
WORD STUDY
This year in fourth grade we will be concentrating on building a word work program. This means your students will be working with a set of words that provides opportunities to grow their word knowledge at their own pre-assessed level. Each week we focus on a different pattern/prefix or suffix meaning/ and or word derivatives. Students will have their lists written in their agendas if you would like to see the list we are currently working on. In class we practice analyzing patterns, spelling the words, and using the words in writing. There is a weekly review over patterns to help build foundations for spelling and usage in writing. Sometimes in the agenda you will see stars by certain words (NOT EVERY WEEK), and on those weeks students will be responsible for spelling those words correctly in dictated sentences.

Welcome to Fourth Grade Math! The fourth grade experience at the Shepard Elementary School is exciting and challenging. Building on the skills developed in the primary grades, we guide fourth graders to use those skills along with number talks to further and inspire their learning. In addition to the academic work, student experience is broadened through our Mathematical Mindset model by Jo Boaler.
Students will know…
K1 the names of the place values.
K2 rational numbers can be represented as a decimal.
K3 rational numbers allow us to solve problems that are not possible to solve with just whole numbers.
K4 our number system is based on groups of 10.
K5 place value can be used to compare and order numbers.
K6 the location (place) of a digit in a number determines its value.
K7 numbers can be rounded to approximate their value.
K8 a number line represents the distance of a number from zero.
K9 decimal numeration is just an extension of whole number place value.
K10 points on a number line can represent whole numbers, decimals, and fractions.
K11 points on a number line represents a distance from 0.
Critical Vocabulary
K1 science begins with asking a question.
K2 tools are used to enhance observations and are selected carefully based on the question to be answered or the problem to be solved.
K3 certain types of questions can be answered by investigations
K4 scientists give reasons (evidence) for their claims and conclusions and consider reasons given by others.
K5 observations are made from multiple positions to achieve a variety of perspectives and are repeated to ensure accuracy.
K6 scientists develop ideas based on evidence and change ideas when new evidence becomes available or the old evidence is viewed in a different way.
