Guidance lessons are taught twice a month in each grade. Each 9 weeks, two grades have weekly lessons.
1st 9 weeks (August 15-October 7) Kinder/1st: weekly lessons 2nd 9 weeks (October 12-December 9) 2nd/3rd: weekly lessons
3rd 9 weeks (January 4-March 3) 4th/5th: weekly lessons 4th 9 weeks all grades are every other week
Students in 1st/3rd will use the Second Step curriculum to review bullying and complete the unit. Students will learn how to differentiate between rude, mean, and bullying. Students will be encouraged to be an upstander for themselves and others. We will watch videos, reflect, and have discussions to build upon on prior knowledge.
Students in 5th grade will finish part 2 of the Differences in ME lesson, focused on our different abilities. Students will experience different simulation activities that help to understand how other students' brains work.
All grades will receive their personal safety lessons over the next month. Student families must OPT IN to this lesson. Students will learn several rules: Recognize, Refuse, and Report/Always Ask First/8 Never Never Rules. We will also discuss safe/unsafe touches as well as the Private Body Parts Rule. The information is covered in two separate lessons.
5th grade will finish their unit on Personal Safety the week before spring break. Their next lesson topic will be focuses on building relationship skills.

Kinder students will learn about how to build quality friendships and how to be a good friend.
2nd grade students will listen to a story, Each Kindness, students will make connections. We will complete a kindness experiment.
4th grade students will discuss gossip and rumors. Students will listen to Trouble Talk and will play a "Cross the line if..." activity.
5th grade students will discuss real friendships and fake friendships. Students will review fake/real friendships with role playing interview game.
1st grade students will learn about how to build quality friendships and how to be a good friend.
3rd grade students will practice how to start conversations with someone new. Students will be challenged to use the conversations skills in the "real world" and report back. :) We will also practice giving and receiving compliments.
4th grade students will finish the CCMR lesson depending on their class or they will work on giving and receiving compliments. Students will view a compliment video and then move around the room to do a "warm fuzzies" activity.
5th grade students will discuss real friendships and fake friendships. Students will reflect on their friendships and will be able to distinguish between genuine friendship and insincere friendship.
One Kinder class will have the CCMR lesson. They will discuss all the schools they will attend and what they want to do when they grow up. Students will do a sorting activity with peers to find tools and supplies for different jobs. The other classes will review bullying and how to be an upstander.
Students in grade 2 will discuss options after high school and will explore different career paths using their chrome book.
Students in grades 4/5 will complete their college pennant and explore a website called Reality Check. This will help students understand the necessary salaries for their desired lifestyle.
Students in grade 1 will listen to a story about jobs and will do an activity focused on what tools/skills they need for a job they are interested in.
Students in grade 3 will discuss options after high school and will practice completing a resume.
Students in grades 4/5 will finish our lesson on CCMR (College, Career, and Military Readiness) by discussing options after high school and researching colleges.

During these lessons, students will have an opportunity to share about what makes them different. We will learn from each other about how we are the same and different. We will share what we are grateful for. Students will make connections to read alouds; whether it's someone who looks and/or acts differently than themselves, has different ability, or believes something else.
During Red Ribbon Week, we focus on making healthy choices for our mind and bodies. Grades 3-5 also discuss peer pressure. We differentiate between positive and negative peer pressure. We role play to practice saying no.

Students in all grades will discuss growth mindset during their guidance lessons. We will be introduced to the terminology growth and fixed mindset. Students will watch videos, engage in activities, and reflect on how much their mindset has over their words, actions, and learning.
Kinder and 1st grade students will also practice game and station time during guidance.
Students in Kindergarten will review Kelso's Choices. This is a great program that helps students learn that they can solve small problems on their own. Kinder students got to make their own choice in their BIG problem/small problem booklet. Look for those to come home! 1st grade played a game with all 9 Kelso's Choices and work on using I statements to share how they are feeling during a conflict. 3rd grade reviewed small problem choices and practiced using I statements with social scenarios. 5th grade students completed a self reflection/pre-check about conflict resolution. We viewed a video with scenarios and discussed what they would do.

Students in Kindergarten will be introduced to Kelso's Choices. This is a great program that helps students learn that they can solve small problems on their own. Look for a Kelso's Wheel sheet to come home. 1st and 2nd will review Kelso's Choices and work on using I statements to share how they are feeling during a conflict. 4th grade will look at taking others perspectives to help understand a conflict and how to positively communicate to work it out.

We will play games with recognizing appropriate feelings with problems. We will discuss size of problems and introduce/review Zones of Regulation. Chat with your student about what each color zone means.
