Interactions within the Universe
Activities in this unit focus on the structure and components of the universe and the cyclical nature and relationships that exist among these components. Major topics include chemistry, components of the universe, and components of the solar system.
The First Nine Weeks will mainly focus on Chemistry. Students will get to perform labs and learn all about the Periodic Table & Atoms!
Enduring Understandings
All atoms are made of subatomic particles which determine properties.
The periodic table is an organization of elements based on properties.
Chemical reactions follow the law of conservation of mass.
Essential Questions
How does the unique structure of each element contribute to the organization of the periodic table of elements?
How are types of elements chosen for specific product manufacturing?
Is there a better way to organize the elements on the periodic table?
How is the law of conservation of mass observed in everyday life?
Knowledge
Atomic structure
Parts of an element
Organization of the Periodic Table
Properties of metals, nonmetals and metalloids
Evidence of chemical change
The law of conservation of mass
Skills
Using a Periodic Table to classify elements based on physical and chemical properties
Differentiating between elements and compounds
Recognizing how a balanced equation supports the law of conservation of mass
This nine weeks does include Components of the Universe, but the majority of it will be learned in the 2nd Nine Weeks.
