Activities in this unit focus on how living systems are defined by the complementary nature of structure and function. Students will study chemistry, digestion, circulation, and respiration and analyze how lifestyle and family history affect longevity.
The First Nine Weeks will focus on the Digestive system and the beginning of the Circulatory and Respiratory system. Students will explore the functions of these body systems and how the effects of our habit can impact the chemistry of our organ systems.
Enduring Understandings
Physical properties and chemical reactions determine the difference between elements and compounds.
All living things are made of cells.
All body systems work together to support the human body.
Personal choices affect the function of the human body.
Organisms respond to internal and external stimuli.
Essential Questions
How can I create a healthy lifestyle?
What happens to my food after I eat?
How is the cell connected to the organization of living things?
How does the human body work to maintain homeostasis when presented with internal and external stimuli?
How do the organs of the digestive system work together to create an efficient system?
How is matter broken down into the smallest unit?
What are the implications of exercise on the human body?
How does energy change from one form to another?
