Fifth Grade - 2021-2022

Mathews Elementary

IF YOUR CHILD IS INTERESTED IN A SCIENCE/ENGINEERING CHALLENGE, check out this opportunity.

2022 FLUOR ENGINEERING CHALLENGE

This is a completely optional and outside of the school day opportunity, but one that our district asked us to make available to all students.

IMPORTANT - FIELD STAAR TEST

This letter was sent home with students, but just in case you didn't see it.....here it is! Mathews' Fifth Grade is scheduled to take a Math STAAR FIELD TEST on Tuesday, February 15th. This test will be given with the same standards of a 'real' STAAR Test. There will be no score given to students on this test, however, we do feel that it will be a great way for our students to experience what a STAAR Test is like at the 5th grade level.

Please be sure your child is here on February 15th if possible and is encouraged to do their very best - but not stress!

Thank you!

CONGRATULATIONS to ALL our Spelling Bee Participants!

Our Mathews' Spelling Bee had 23 participants on Thursday, December 16th! It was an exciting time and very stressful! All participants should be congratulated on their amazing efforts! It was a difficult task, but we came away with a great champion who will represent Mathews at the District Spelling Bee in mid-January!

CONGRATULATIONS TO DIYA N.

Diya qualified at the DISTRICT SPELLING BEE to move on to the COLLIN COUNTY SPELLING BEE on FEBRUARY 10th!

We're behind you all the way!

IMPORTANT PARENT INFORMATION

Take a look at the 5th Grade Calendar below. Students have required nightly reading (20 minutes) each night Monday through Thursday with a short comprehension piece (5 questions) each scheduled Friday. We are excited that students can access these stories using their HMH textbooks OR online through webdesk.pisd.edu. Students may also use the read aloud feature to help with improving fluency. If your child uses this option, please be sure that your child uses the book online or hard copy to follow along while the text is read aloud. (Please see chart below evidencing the benefits of 20 minutes of reading daily.)

Students are required to complete 5 lessons on Dreambox per week outside of school. We have found that this consistent practice helps to solidify math skills and extend students who need it.

Please check Parent Portal often to check your child's grades in each subject area. Also, the calendar below will give you a heads up about upcoming TESTS .

During our next Tech Free Friday on 2/11, students will be making their own lanterns just like families would have done during early colonial times. Your child will need to bring an empty tin can (like an empty vegetable can) to school. The top lid should be removed from the can, fill it with water (not all the way to the top to allow for expansion as the water freezes) and then put it in the freezer for the water to turn into ice. Your child will bring this frozen tin can to school wrapped in a towel on 2/11/2022. While at school, we will use a hammer (please send one if you can) and a nail to make a pattern to create a beautiful lantern. See photo below of a final result.
